9 for the oc game!
-which oc has had the most major redesign?
Right now definitely Corela. She didn't even have proper dragon wings when I first designed her, and how her base form does. Beyond that, in my main rp with her she's currently going through a fairly major redesign. The canonical reason is she's finally getting exposure to the sun which is the dragon's main source of magic in this world (and shes half dragon).
The irl reason was just that I felt her design was a bit... Jumbled. Different colored wings and tail, and she doesn't have any other dragon features when she's in her base form. While this worked for her at the start (as she was a fucked up science experiment as a result of merging souls), as she's come into herself and become more comfortable with her identity, that piecemeal design doesn't work for her.
Eventually her base form will have scale patches all over, her eyes will shift to having slit pupils constantly, and her teeth will get a lil sharper. She'll also be a bit taller and have freckles, but that's more to do with being healthier.
Her other forms will be more drastic, eventually I want her full draconic form to have iridescent white as a base color that fades into blue and red at her extremities, but we haven't gotten to that part yet.
Eventually I plan to fully redesign Tiama. I want to lean into the idea of her identity being formed by those she interacted with, which is why so far the normal shape she takes is fairly human and exclusively female (all of her friends are female, and the two she sees most often are very close to human)
Now that she's not as restricted, I am gonna have some fun with her figuring out her identity and how she wants to look, but that'll be done later.
Corela has one main guiding force for her arguments with others, which is never escalate until they do. No threats until threatened, no insults until insulted.
Mind you .. this only applies in terms of categories. Someone could pull a knife on her and she'd hit them over the head with a flaming staff. Someone might insult her clothes and she'd say their mother must be dissapointed to have been stuck with such a bitch of a child.
If she can reasonably say "they started it!" She'll go for it.
Obviously this is extreme cases, but it's where she differs from some of my other ocs. Sayala avoids confrontation with stealth but still gets shit done, and Tiama sees a trespasser as a target.
Corela stretches out along the sand
She's been on the surface for a month
Yet the warmth from the sun is just as lovely as it was the first time
She shifts her legs, shuffling warm sand onto her scales
She purrs. It's as warm as a volcano but as soft as a blanket.
So after an exhausting yoga class I'm gonna treat myself and ramble about my ocs powers and weaknesses. Under the cut cause this is probably gonna be long.
Corela
Defensive: Corela is kinda shit defensively. Her magic stamina is low, and in cold environments her defense is weakened drastically cause her body is using most of that energy trying to keep her alive. However in dragon form she does have tough scales, and in either form heat accelerates her healing. She often takes lava baths in dragon form when injured.
Offensive: fire magic and energy blades (think like undynes spears). Her blades are curved like a sickle but because they're pure magic every part of them hurts. They tend to be purple but they lighten as she runs out of magic. She can't generate fire while humanoid cause her throat isnt resistant, so she generally carries some firestarter materials with her, including a lighter. When she does breath fire, her fire breath is the same purple color, cause it's fueled by magic. Her magic is very strong but that's because her body doesn't have a very controlled output, so it's all or nothing
When exposed to extreme cold for long periods of time, her wings and eventually her tail will dust themselves, as they require small amounts of magic to exist. In other environments the magic is negligible compared to the natural recovery, but in the cold her body is essentially in emergency mode.
Others: can transform between a human form with wings and a tail, and a full European dragon form. She has a halfway point she can hold, but she has to focus hard and most of her training is focused around her trying to hold that form during physical activities. Useful for needing external fire res in small spaces, or needing claws to climb, but outside of that it's not great. In the halfway form her legs turn digitigrade, and her tail extends for balance. She tends to lean forward somewhat in this form.
Edit: she has figured out how to hold this form without strain. but it doesn't have scales as strong as her full dragon form.
Jesus I have a lot of info on her. Next character!
She can regrow these limbs. The tail takes a long time but regrows relatively cleanly, just with the pains of growth spurts. Her wings, on the other hand, regrow under her skin, and will burst out once halfway grown. This is incredibly painful, and she needs someone else with fire in order to heal the wounds quickly. Theoretically she could force the healing process by transforming fully, however the magic cost of transforming and regrowing three limbs would kill her at her current state.
Edit: Exposure to the sun has given her a boost in power and allows her to spark fire magic midair, letting her use it freely. Still struggles with output and emotional control. As a fire dragon her draconic half draws power from the sun.
Tools: Corela is an engineer and scientist at heart and has developed a staff she can use to channel her magic better, and she has found a way to turn her magic into a powder, allowing her to store more outside of her internal magic reserves. (Think like a drink mix. I'm not joking dhdhd).
Edit: her staff can also channel her fire magic through it, giving her a safe output.
Tiama
Offensive: she has powerful plant magic and illusion magic, as well as the ability to shapeshift into any animal, though without her illusion powers she stays all green. Her illusion magic is easiest with one sense, but she can also fool taste, smell, and hearing. She can mess with touch, like heat and texture, however she can't make solid objects, so it's a bit of a null point. Outside of her grove, her powers are extremely weak, and she starts to die as she gets further away from her tree
Edit: Tiama recently soul-bound with a powerful dragon monster, giving her more freedom of movement and another power source. This comes at a cost, though, as they're emotionally linked now and that includes exhaustion.
Other: being a tree nymph, Tiama lives for a long, long time. Over the century she's lived in her grove, her magic has seeped into it, turning the entire place into essentially one giant magic battery. This makes her home great for injured monsters, as their magic recovers extremely fast.
Defensive: Her plant powers are her main defense in combat, but she tends to rely more on trickery. Making herself look terrifying, scaring people by making trees rustle, things like that. She can recover from wounds easily enough if they hit her projected form, however if her tree is wounded it takes much longer to heal. Fire is a definite weak point but because she lives in Waterfall it doesn't burn too long. Also a bit of a cold weakness but again she doesn't leave her area often at all, and it's not as severe as Corela.
Edit: gains a power boost in the sun, and also relies in trickery in terms of information. Will restrict powers to make other underestimate her.
Tools: Tiama refuses to let weapons of any kind into her grove, and this extends to herself.
Sayala
Offensive: great archery skills that she uses regularly for hunting food. Able to use physical or conjured arrows(again, think undynes spears), which means ammo isn't an issue unless she's doing something like flaming arrows. Rouge-like movements and tactics.
Defensive: great acrobatic skills, often hunts by jumping from tree to tree. Good stealth as well. Used to spying on guards so her hearing and sight are fine tuned to being aware of her surroundings. She also has thick fur which provides cold resistance, but she exhausts quickly in the warmth. If she lives in a temperate area for long she sheds her 'winter' coat.
Other: good with her hands and limited materials, she lives in the forest after all. The best character to have with you if you need to survive without magic
Tools: her bow and quiver, along with a simple knife.
Zora
Offensive: no offensive powers or magic, though her teeth are slightly sharper than normal and she has a human's resistance to attacks.
Defensive: when given a magic boost from an amulet or similar source she can create shields, but she hasn't trained them much since she's still a kid
Other: while definitely more trusting than her sister, Corela, Zora will still fight when nessecary and has bitten people on more than one occasion. Corela encourages this.
Tools: depends on the day but nothing is certain. She does have a ring that disguises her as a monster with a form similar to her sister's halfway form, based off of Tiama's magic. She uses this to avoid confrontation for being human.
Freya
Offensive: just a little bit of fire magic. She doesn't engage in combat often.
Defensive: her tough scales are more than enough for most attacks
Other: she's a potion master at heart, so she always has some kind of magic at her disposal, just not her own. She knows poisons and cures and mixes that will turn off senses at will, do not fuck with her.
Tools: an honestly unhealthy number of types of potions. You don't need that many poisons.
Tykee
Offensive: their magic has such a severe side effect that they don't use it often. Aside from their magic, Tykee also has retractable claws on their front paws and fangs, as well as a strong snake body they can use to trap opponents. Currently strength training their wings to use them as bludgeoning weapons.
Defensive: they can use their luck magic to escape really bad situations but it's a last ditch effort cause otherwise the side effects will weaken them severely. Otherwise, their scales aren't too weak, and their fur and feathers help with the cold for short periods of time.
Tools: they use throwing knives as their main weapon.
Kekoa
Offensive: just an entire bastard. Most of his strength comes from how much he traumatized Corela, and his scientific knowledge. He knows most common monster weak points, and is very analytical about situations. He used to have power over trees but ever since Corela turned him into an ash monster that's been pretty tricky.
Defensive: good luck hitting a sentient ash cloud. His one weakness is fire.
Other: honestly just fuck this guy
Tools: everything you'd find in an evil experimenting scientist's lab. Poisons, scalpels, etc.
Hello, dear! You've been visited by the random character question fairy! :D ~☆
Does your character have any pets? Have they had any pets in the past? If no to both questions, what pet would they want to have, if they even want a pet at all?
Oh! Thank you!
My main oc, Corela (and by extension her sister), does have pets, though they're closer to a mix of familiars and a repopulation project. She found a dying species of these fire-lizards(think dragon but lizard sized and fragile as a bird) and is trying to bring them back to a decent population, after they were hunted down for food.
The reason I call them closer to familiars is that mentally they're a a halfway point between a smart animal and a human. They can understand language, but generally communicate through emotions and telepathy, and they would probably struggle with very abstract concepts such as math. She feeds them, provides a home, and protects them, and in exchange they make sure she's safe by warning her of any danger. This is mostly due to their pack instinct. She's Family now, no going back.
Oh, they also amplify magic used by those they've bonded to, which is the one way Zora can use her limited magic.
Tiama also kinda has pets, but it's just all the animals that have taken up residence in her garden/home.
Anyway, love the idea for your blog, keep doing what you're doing, I loved answering this question!
It was nesting season, in Corela's home.
In most species that would imply finding a mate, giving birth, things like that. Dragons are... Different. With their long lifespan, it takes a while for their young to mature. Once they have a child, it could take decades before they have another. So nesting season, instead of being a flurry of heat and emotions, was about taking care of their family, and sticking together. A way to keep bonds alive when many members spend months out finding a cave to call their own, or when the grudge against them leads to years of seclusion to keep themselves safe.
Thankfully, these instincts mixed well with draconic hoarding instincts, leading to found family and close friends counting as well.
In practice, this meant that the normal craft-heavy and usually seperate routine of Zora and Corela's gets turned into about a week or two (depending on how stressful the past months have been) of dimmer lights, a roaring fire, cozy food, and a practically permanent pillow fort encompassing the entire living room, with exits by the kitchen and stairway. Zora didn't get these nesting urges naturally, but she gets almost secondhand urges from her soulbond with Corela. Corela is in her dragon form about 70% of the time during this week, curled around the inside of the fort, with Zora tucked in the middle.
Nesting urges tend to have two main components: finding your loved ones, and keeping them close and happy. In Corela's case, this involves a pile of blankets and pillows, a well-stocked fridge and freezer, and all the crafting supplies Zora could need. Corela tends to get fussy if she can't provide, so the week before nesting season she spends preparing, usually out hunting for food. Zora often has to reassure her that no, she doesn't need more colored pencils, she's Fine.
As annoying as it may be to succumb to instincts three to four times a year, it's not too bad. Nightmares are rare when they're bundled up next to eachother, and it's basically a vacation from everything else. And with a roaring fire, a full stomach, and a rumbling dragon surrounding you, what more do you need?
