Corey Pegues had a history of gang activity, but eventually rose up in the NYPD to become the 13th highest ranking African American officer. Join us for a reading and discussion of his memoir, Once A Cop, 2pm today at Central Library. http://qnslib.org/6rNs302dgEN
Not sure how familia you good folk are with the story of Corey Pegues. but it’s a clear case of double standard. a clear case of “us vs you”. a fraternity based on one color that has a ranking system largely based on another color. “NYPD bosses got their pals in Nassau County to seize the guns from disgraced former big-shot cop Corey Pegues’ house — and are working on a plan to yank his $135,000-a-year disability pension, The Post has learned. Officers on Monday night removed three guns from Pegues’ Hempstead home for violating the “good conduct’’ clause on his permit, sources said. “This is in my authority to do this, and if [Pegues] doesn’t like it, he can take me to court and sue me,’’ Nassau’s top cop, Thomas Krumpter, told a pal after honoring the NYPD’s request. And the NYPD isn’t through taking on Pegues, who publicly boasted about being a former drug dealer, killer wannabe and close pals with a fiend who helped kill rookie Officer Eddie Byrne in 1988. In an unprecedented move, the department is “definitely moving ahead in an attempt to find sufficient legal grounds to invalidate his line-of-duty pension by ‘decertifying’ his employment,” a source said. Pegues, 45, currently receives a $135,000 annual, tax-free disability pension from injuries related to falling off a chair while he was commander of the 67th Precinct. Byrne’s brother Larry is the NYPD’s deputy commissioner for legal affairs. While he hasn’t openly discussed Pegues in the office, “He’s got to be very upset about it,’’ a source said. How The Post covered the story. As The Post exclusively reported Monday, Pegues touted his illicit past to try to peddle an unpublished book about his life. The NYPD may now also be able to mount a successful legal challenge to the shamed ex-officer’s hefty pension because he lied about his past when he was hired, a source said. “It’s like someone who hides the fact that he has brain cancer on a life-insurance policy and his family tries to cash in afterward. Once the fraud is discovered, the policyholder’s heirs can’t collect,” the source explained. Instead, Pegues “could be reimbursed the amount of money he paid into his [pension] policy over the years, but wouldn’t be allowed to collect the benefits he’s now receiving for his line-of-duty injury,” the source added. Pegues — whose daughter and nephew are NYPD cops and whose wife is a retired sergeant — issued a statement Tuesday saying in part: “I am disappointed that my message to the youth about bringing about positive change in their lives is being distorted by claims that I am bragging about my former life.’’
must watch.
