So I’ve started coping differently

When I feel buried by the darkness

I measure out sugar

When my wrists itch for familiar relief

I cut cold butter

When my eyes are swollen and no amount of rubbing will bring clarity

I beat a couple of eggs

When my rage boils at all the injustice I feel so singularly helpless against

I preheat the oven

Today was one of those days

Once sparks flew

Smoke ascended

Temperatures simmered

I let rebellion rest

Nothing’s really different

At least now

I have cookies to share

Cornbread Cookies

I made cornbread cookies with honey butter glaze and honey buttercream frosting, and they may be my new favorite thing.

I want to make them again with fresh blueberries, I think.

Though they'd probably also be nice with blackberries.
