Another plant association for the autumn with the dark dissected foliage of Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla 'Eva' (black elder, syn. Sambucus ‘Black Lace’) contrasting with the flowers of the bulbous perennial Nerine bowdenii (Bowden lily, Cornish lily, Cape flower, Guernsey lily). These were part of a planting outside my local swimming pool.

On Orkney the South African bulbs Nerine bowdenii (Bowden lily, Cornish lily, Cape flower, Guernsey lily) seem to thrive. This perennial has been described as “adding a splash of glamour to the autumn garden”, which with the umbels of bright pink flowers it surely does.

The sparkling white flowers of Nerine bowdenii ‘Alba’ (Bowden lily, Cornish lily, Cape flower, Guernsey lily) bloom before the leaves appear. This is a frost hardy perennial that thrives on a well-drained soil in a sunny location. This bulb is a native of South Africa.
