On Orkney the South African bulbs Nerine bowdenii (Bowden lily, Cornish lily, Cape flower, Guernsey lily) seem to thrive. This perennial has been described as “adding a splash of glamour to the autumn garden”, which with the umbels of bright pink flowers it surely does.

A fine display of Nerine bowdenii cultivars (Bowden lily, Guernsey Lily, Jersey lily, and Cape flower) and Nerine undulata Crispa group at the RHS Autumn Show, London. These bulbs are summer-dormant, perennial bulbs which produce erect leafless stem of funnel-shaped flowers in autumn. The flowers are followed by strap-shaped leaves. These plants need a sheltered position with well-drained soil and can be protected in in colder areas with a deep dry winter mulch. Nerine undulata Is less hardy and is frequently grown in a container which can be placed inside for greater protection from low temperatures.
