St. Ives!

We arrived in St. Ives on Tuesday and it is absolutely beautiful. After Tintagel I didn’t think that I could see prettier views and St. Ives is definitely challenging that. On our first day we went for a quick walk around parts of the town and stopped in for ice cream at the Moomaid. Afterwards we went back to our apartments (that’s right apartments we are done with hostels) and made dinner. Traveling was pretty tiring so after that I stayed in and relaxed. 

Yesterday we had class in the morning and a free afternoon. Emily and I went for lunch after class and found this cute pub called The Hain Line. They are really reasonably priced and some of the meals include a drink (alcoholic or regular) which was awesome. After lunch, I met up with Linda and she took me on Linda’s Shopping & Gossip Tour of St. Ives. Got some great pictures of the town and we blew a few bubbles along the way! We stopped in at Olive’s cafe for some tea and scones (well hot chocolate for me). Then we went around the town a bit more and stopped in at her house and I got to see her mermaid and we called my grandpa! :) Once I went home I relaxed for a little before going out of the Lantern Ghost Walk. Not too scary but interesting and the tour guide was really funny! Now we have a free day so I’m going to go off and explore some more.

Tintagel!

Okay so we haven’t had wifi for awhile so I haven’t been able to upload pictures but here are some of the highlights from Tintagel. We got there and went to tour Merlin’s Cave and saw the ruins of Tintagel Castle (supposedly where Arthur was born). Monday we went to the church and then on a cliff walk to Bossiney. Along the way we saw some cliff jumpers and I got some really pretty pictures. Our hostel was on the edge of a cliff so the view from our bedroom was BEAUTIFUL! We left on Tuesday morning but on our way to St. Ives we stopped and saw Dozmary Pool (supposedly the water where Bedivere threw Excalibur). Definitely a nice small place with some really gorgeous views I liked it a lot!

Day 5: We went to Wells today to see the Cathedral. We got there early and went to some of the outdoor markets for lunch. I got a spinach & feta pasty which was delicious! Then we walked around outside the bishop’s palace and sat in the sun until it was time to go into the Cathedral. We got there a little late for the tour so we jumped in when we caught up to them. The tour guide was adorable and had a lot of interesting things to tell us about the Cathedral. They have the oldest functioning clock (which is really cool when it goes off on the hour). They also have the oldest pieces of furniture in England (the cope chest). After the tour, we walked around some of the areas that weren’t included on the tour (like the library). The library had a really pretty book from 1690. After the tour we walked around Wells for a little and then went back to the area outside bishop palace and sat down to have a snack. We went back to the Cathedral for Evensong to hear the choir sing...also really cool! Then we headed back to Glastonbury for the night. We take off for Tintagel early tomorrow morning! Can’t wait! :)

Days 3 & 4: All the Henges and Bath

Yesterday we woke up super early (4am...no one was pleased) but it paid off because we get to go on a small group tour at Stonehenge. It was magnificent! Getting to see it in person and walk through the remains was an indescribable experience. Despite it being pretty cloudy out I think I got some really great pictures. Then we went and saw Woodhenge (I had never heard of it before) which they think was used as a gaming area where people would try and shoot the arrows in between the wood. The picture I’m uploading are rock stumps that have been put in place to mark where the original wood pillars were (they have rotted away). It had started to rain so instead of going on a 3 hour walk (which was the original plan) we found a little inn and had breakfast there instead. We then went back to Stonehenge so that we could see the museum and go to the gift shop. Afterwards, we went to Avebury which is a village surrounded by rock structures (similar to Stonehenge but obviously must bigger since there is a village inside). It was raining pretty hard so I just went to the museum and then to the Red Lion pub to warm up. We then headed back to the hostel and got a chance to relax, eat dinner and work on homework. 

Today some of us took our day off to go to Bath. It was even more fun than I was expecting. We went to the Jane Austen Exhibit first which was really cool The employees were dressed up as characters from the novel. There was a presentation first where Kitty Bennet told us about Jane Austen’s life and family. Then we went down to the exhibit where there were pictures and information about Austen’s life in Bath as well as a short film detailing some of the connections between her novel and Bath. We got to try on some of the period costumes and try out writing with a quill and ink. Then we walked up and saw the Crescent Manor as well as some of the gardens nearby. As we walked down towards the river we stopped in and took a look around the Abbey. There was a group of kids inside rehearsing a song which was really cute. Afterwards, we got snacks and walked down to the river where we got some really nice pictures. We got lucky because when we walked back up to the Roman Baths there wasn’t a long line and we were able to go in and take our time going around and looking at all of the history as well as taking lots of pictures of the Baths. When we left the Baths we went and had dinner at a nice bar before driving back to the hostels. So overall it’s been a successful couple of days and hopefully I’ll be able to upload pictures soon! :)
