It didn’t seem like that much. The snow started about six o’clock Tuesday evening floating down as a fine dust. By eight I was canceling plans for the next day, but I was sure I’d feel silly in the morning. Just before midnight the power went out. Sarah threw another blanket over Bean and I went back to sleep. She checked the power company’s website, they said it should be fixed in the morning.
It wasn’t fixed in the morning. It wasn’t fixed in the afternoon. We spent all day freezing under layers of sweaters. We spent the night in a hotel across town. We spent the next day on public transit making it back to our house. We had power, but we had no groceries. So we spent the next day trekking to the market and back. I lost my debit card in the snow. We didn’t try to get the car out till Sunday. The snow is still a foot deep on our street.
There was no beer in the fridge, so I reached into the closet. I found a bottle of Stupid Stout from Coronado Brewing. It’s got a solid year on it, so I might as well give it a taste.
It’s more self-indulgent than I remember. Last year, Stupid Stout was clearly an aggressive but balanced beer. This time around it’s all milk chocolate and junk. I mean, it’s not Hershey’s but definitely not the 80% cacao stuff Sarah likes. A thin layer of smoke floats just above the surface adding a little complexity. The body is chewy, but not syrupy. And the alcohol is well balanced at only nine percent.
Now it looks like the snow will be turning to rain. I might wake up later this week with six inches of water in my living room.
