On Tuesday families and individuals went to pay tribute to their loved ones at the municipal cemetery “Panteón No.13” near the outskirts of the Tijuana-Tecate, Mexico area for Day of the Dead festivities. Many of the people buried in Panteón 13 (which was suppose to be the newest city cemetery and reach capacity in a seven year time frame, is now expected to be filled in less than 3 years, not the seven that was planned) have died from the Coronavirus and from Tijuana’s high murder rate; which continues nonstop daily, according to the Municipal Department of Reforestation and Cemeteries. — In 2020, most cemeteries in Baja California were closed, with a few exceptions, to people gathering for the Day of the Dead festivity due at the time to the high Covid-19 rates in the state and as a preventative measure to control and curb a wider spreading of the virus. Since yesterday, asylum seekers from the Joventud 2000 shelter in Tijuana’s Zona Norte area were escorted by migrant organizers to get their Coronavirus vaccine shot (a one dose of the Janssen Johnson & Johnson biological). On Tuesday, June 22, 2021, thirty more migrants were walked to a downtown vaccination site to get immunized from Covid-19 (with today’s trip, the shelter now has vaccinated all the 60 plus adults staying at the refuge which total to 140 occupants, the rest being children). Among the migrants who got vaccinated, many were from Central American countries like Honduras and El Salvador and Mexican nationals from the states of Michoacán and Veracruz. — José María García Lara, the director of the Joventud 2000 shelter, said he had told Baja California officials for weeks now that migrants should be offered vaccines. When finally age group eligibility opened up for all, Lara and shelter organizers took advantage of the opportunity given to them to set up a trip for the migrants since the state’s health department wants all people over 18 years of age to get immunized (since during the weekend few residents went to vaccination sites to get their Covid-19 shots). — Other migrant shelters, along with the Joventud 200, have also done these vaccination trips on their own. The majority migrants in Tijuana who have gotten vaccinated so far have been Mexican. The city of Tijuana expanded its vaccination sites to qualified adults ages 50-59 for their first Pfizer-BioNtech Coronavirus doses, along with any remaining senior citizens who were not able to get their second doses, who were due to have them weeks ago (as the State of Baja California had ran out of many SinoVac vaccines for the elderly; many criticized the lack of organization by the state government in not evenly distributing supplies to different municipalities given to them by the Mexican federal government) on Saturday, May 15, 2021. — Mexico has now fully vaccinated 7.92% (more than 10 Million people) of its entire population with 25 Million doses administered, according to the John Hopkins University Medicine Coronavirus Resource Center. Tijuana’s senior citizens lined up to get their second round of Coronavirus shots both by car and foot on Wednesday, April 21, 2021, leaving them now completing vaccinated (until further notice; since Pfizer-BioNTech and SinoVac have suggested that a possible third dose may be needed to combat current and future strains of Covid-19, which will be in production during the fall). Vaccination sites will continue to administer second doses to those 60 years and over on the weekend and until the end of the month, according to the Baja California health secretary. Once the vaccination of seniors conclude all over Mexico, the federal government has said it will begin its next phase of its national Covid-19 vaccine program, allowing those that are 50 years and older to set appointments. Photos for @anadoluimages — Mexico’s health department announced it would eliminate their Coronavirus epidemiological warning system, as vaccine drives continue throughout the country. — The state of Baja California has a 90 percent tile of people with at least one Coronavirus vaccine shot applied and has had for weeks now very low Covid-19 cases and deaths reported. Though Baja California went maskless officially on Monday both in doors and out; optional to wear a face mask, medical officials made a call to citizens not to lower their guard and mask up if they feel the need to protect themselves.
