Hi Mr. ENTJ, hope you’re doing well! How is the work life balance for corporate strategy compared to consulting? I’m a consultant (pre-MBA, 2 years in) who enjoys the problem solving and teamwork aspects of consulting, but want something that gives me more time on the weekdays to pursue my personal passions. Are there options other than corporate strategy you’d recommend based on personal or peer experiences?
Corporate strategy has had much better work-life balance compared to consulting. I have my evenings/weekends back and no more weekly travel with the exception of occasional international trips to put out fires halfway across the world. The most I had to travel in one year post-consulting was in 2018 when I had to be in Tokyo (x3), Singapore (x2), Malaysia, Dublin, and Portland in a 7-month span but even then I was able to bring my wife with me and we converted some of that into a vacation. Be prepared to lose airline and hotel status. During busy season, I may pull the occasional 50-60 hour week but it’s for short sprints only and it typically won’t last longer than 2-3 weeks for intense engagements.
Keep in mind I work in BigTech that’s known for work-life balance and extreme perks so your mileage will vary depending on your own exit.
Look into product management or business operations as alternatives.
