How do you deal with passive-aggressive managers?

I'm struggling, please help! My manager discourages me from participating in meetings, making new connections, presents my work as hers, and takes credit for my ideas and when I try to do any of this, she takes it out on me by giving me petty jobs that are not even important. She is extremely insecure and I have tried to mold myself to work with her. But 1.5 yrs later, she is getting worse and worse and I'm getting nowhere. The situation is extremely frustrating and instead of showing maturity, I have started to retaliate. I have tried confronting to her but it hasn't led to anything fruitful.

Two people complete the same task.

One sends a clear update to the manager. The other stays silent.

The manager remembers the person who updated.

Not necessarily because they worked harder, but because their work became visible.

In corporate environments, effort alone does not define your reputation. Communication, reliability, and timely updates play a major role in how your contribution is perceived.

Sometimes the difference between being overlooked and being trusted is simply how clearly you communicate your work.

Feeling tired and exhausted every day is destructive to our well-being. But oftentimes, it's taken as an excuse for being unproductive or skipping work. How can you justify taking a mental health break? You can't. Unless you are working for someone who has had similar challenges or at least has experienced how bad it could be for your overall health.

We live in a world where nothing is simple. Everything is complicated. When you climb up the corporate ladder, your work is 50% of your job, the rest is all about how good you are with people. I have always believed in upskilling and I still do! There is no substitute for that. But it is not enough. Why is dealing with humans so complex? I strongly believe if you know how to deal with people, you are halfway there.

So, consider this - while you upskill yourself, do invest in learning people skills. It is a critical part of our overall development. I'm on this journey myself, although I'm an introvert. But forcing yourself out of your comfort zone - whether it's about taking on new challenges at work or doing things you dislike - oftentimes makes all the difference in giving you that push that could skyrocket your career.
