I live in central Arizona, at about a mile elevation. Our summer heat isn't quite as bad as southern AZ, but it still gets stinking hot (high 90s/low 100s F daytime) and June is usually the hottest month.
My old-enough-to-vote Subaru is having starter issues, and rather than risk having it not start in a tiny, cramped parking lot (unfriendly to Triple-A trucks) I walked to my Dr. appointment this morning (one mile each way). The key phrase is 'this morning', because no way would I try it after 11am. Even so, I took plenty of cold water, wore my sunhat, and used an umbrella.
I used to be one of those young punks who smiled at old ladies using umbrellas in the sun but those old ladies knew their shit. That thing is the difference between 'feeling warm' and 'getting seriously overheated'. It keeps the force of the sun off your upper body, not just head and neck. I've had heat exhaustion once and it sucked. That was when I was in my 20s. At 65 it would be a lot more serious. So yeah, I'm sold on umbrellas as sun protection, no matter what age you are.
