A decent story with fun characters and solid writing. All the musical numbers were good, especially the first one in the underworld. Everything was really well animated. Crazy that they considered it a happy ending when Emily was so obviously superior to Victoria.
There may be some bias in me as a Tim Burton and Danny Elfman fan but I can’t find a single thing wrong with this movie other than it isn’t long enough (give me more!). This really is such a clean little wrapped up film that I just want to kiss all over. The color palette, the stopmotion, the songs, this movie is both visually striking and musically brilliant. What’s not to love? An absolute must watch, full stop.

We begin with a two (2) sided song about a wedding rehearsal, one (1) family is ecstatic while the other is dreading the events about to unfold. We meet the nervous if not a little flighty Victor and his bride-to-be, Victoria, who have a brief (and scandalous) moment alone while Victor is playing the piano. At the rehearsal Victor cannot remember his vows and the pastor warns that if Victor can’t get his vows right the wedding will be off! A strange man comes in at this time too, a Lord Barkis, neither of Victoria’s parents can recall how they know him but welcome him in either way. Victor goes off by himself to mope in the woods and practice his vows. With a sudden burst of courage Victor recites his vows perfectly and places the wedding ring on a tree root sticking up out of the ground. The wind begins to pick up and all at once the root, which was really a skeletal hand, gabbed onto Victor! It pulled his arm right down into the ground but he was able to pull it out and stumble away just in time to see the thing that grabbed him coming up out of the ground. The way she rises up is truly something to behold, it really is creepy and our lovely Corpse Bride almost looks scary in some of the shots they have in this scene! I love it so much! Victor is able to break free of the corpse’s grasp by detaching the skeletal arm from its body, yikes! He tries to run and thinks he has gotten away but his new bride is upon him before he even realizes what’s going on.
Victor wakes in a world of color (there’s no place like home, right Toto?) which is actually the world of the dead and he has some major adjusting to do! Good thing there are a ton of undead there to explain everything via catchy song. The musical gang explain that Emily, the Corpse Bride, was a living girl once who was in love with a man that her parents didn’t approve of so they made a plan to elope. The strange thing about this plan is that he told her to bring all her parent’s money with her. The night they were to meet Emily was all alone for a long time, and when her lover finally showed up… The next thing she knew she woke up dead. But everything has changed now because Victor has married her! She can be happy now! Right? Victor tries to run away from her (again) but just runs into her instead, she gives him a wedding present of his old dead dog who is now a living skeleton dog! Neat! Victor realizes he can trick Emily into letting them go topside by saying he wants to introduce her to his (living) parents so they go to Elder Gutknecht and he gives them a spell that sends them to the world of the living. Victor has Emily wait while he “goes to talk to his folks” but really he runs to Victoria (what is she gonna do?). Emily’s maggot (a silly little guy who lives in her head) tells her that Victor is up to no good so she follows him and sees him with Victoria. Filled with jealous rage, Emily grabs Victor and drags him back to the land of the dead. She is furious at him for tricking her and he tries to explain he was engaged to Victoria first but Emily doesn’t understand. All Emily can think about is how Victoria is alive and Emily is dead. There is a beautiful song here, a black widow spider and the maggot try to cheer Emily up but she is set on being sad and sings her sad girl song.
While Emily is sad, Victoria is mad, mad as in looney, she is telling tales about Victor being married to a corpse! That just cannot be true! Lord Barkis says something to Victoria’s parents about how he would treat Victoria right and lavish her with the finer things and that last part was all they really needed to hear. This whole marriage to Victor was to save Victoria’s family from financial ruin so they’ll marry her to the next poor sap (or rich sap) who walks in the door. Victor feels bad for making Emily feel bad and finds her playing a piano alone. He joins her and begins to play a song that she could play along with him. At first Emily doesn’t want to bite, but then she starts to play the duet with him and they make beautiful music. A new dead person comes to town and it just so happens to be Victor’s old driver and he tells Victor about Victoria’s new fiancé. Then we cut to poor little Victoria marrying Lord Barkis. Victor is sad because he realizes he is already too late to be with Victoria but then overhears a conversation with Emily. It turns out “Till Death do us part” actually means that Emily can’t be married to Victor since she’s dead already, Victor would have to sacrifice his life in order for their marriage to be real. Emily says she could never ask that of Victor and Victor says that she won’t have to, he will drink the poison and be her husband forever. They make the announcement that they are going up to the realm of the living to have the wedding and everyone gets ready, they make a big cake and sing a fun song. Once they get up there it is pandemonium… Until the living realize that the dead people are their loved ones! Then they are all happy to see them again!
Lord Barkis finds out that Victoria is broke and he is furious, he wanted that dowry money. The wedding begins and, again, Victor is doing his vows perfectly. Victoria arrives at the wedding and goes all the way up to the front. As Emily is giving her vows she sees Victoria and starts to fumble. Victor finishes her vows for her and begins to drink the poison but Emily stops him. Everyone was very confused as to why Emily would want to stop the wedding, this is what she had been dreaming of her whole death, but she explained that she herself had been cheated out of a wedding and she couldn’t do that to someone else. Emily beckoned for Victoria to come up with her and Victor. Victoria was so happy to be with him again, they had really fallen in love-at-first-sight. Suddenly Lord Barkis interrupts this nice moment and reminds everyone that Victoria is married to him, so her and Victor’s love means nothing. Emily looks at Lord Barkis and recognizes him as her fateful lover from all those years ago. Barkis, knowing he is caught, gains leverage because he holds a sword to Victoria but a bite from Scraps (Victor’s skeleton dog) frees her. Victor has to fight off sword attacks with just a fork before falling and almost getting stabbed clean through. Emily to the rescue! You can’t hurt what’s already dead, so Emily took the blade right in the gut then took it out and held it up to Barkis. Emily told him to leave, but Barkis, being the arrogant and pompous ass he is, couldn’t help himself but to propose a backhanded toast to Emily, little did he know he was drinking poison. Within seconds he was dead (or undead, rather) and was easy pickings for the undead who wanted to punish him for what he did to Emily way back when.
Emily, on the other hand, needed no revenge, her soul was at peace. She walked quietly out of the church and Victor tried to stop her but she told him that he had set her free. She told him she was doing the same thing for him and then gave him his ring back. At the entrance of the church she tossed her bouquet which Victoria ended up with. Finally, Emily, our lovely Corpse Bride, dissolved into beautiful blue butterflies who floated upwards towards the reflective moon. I know this means that she is truly free but I hate watching her go. There is just something so final about turning into hundreds of butterflies and it makes me sad. I am happy for Victor and Victoria but I miss Emily and am sad she is gone (like if you cry every time).
