Public Figure Profile: Susan (Tomalin) Sarandon
Sarandon was born in New York City. She earned her BA in drama at the Catholic University of America in 1968. She made her film debut in 1969 in the movie, Joe. She is probably best known for roles in films like Thelma and Louise, Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Witches of Eastwick, The Lovely Bones, Tammy and several more. She won an Oscar in 1995 for her role in, Dead Man Walking. She’s also made several TV appearances.
Along with being a successful actress, Sarandon is also a passionate activist. In 1993 she and then partner, Tim Robbins spoke out at the Academy Awards in support of HIV-positive refugees. She became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 1999. She has supported several political and human rights causes.In 2006 she received the Action Against Hunger Humanitarian Award. In this recent election, she was a very vocal Bernie Sanders supporter. She has also been very supportive and outspoken and participated in different campaigns for transgender rights, Syrian refugees, and the protest against the Dakota Pipeline.
Sarandon is a mother of one daughter, actress Eva Amurri and sons, Jack and Miles.
Sarandon is currently starring in Ryan Murphy’s series, Feud alongside Jessica Lange. She is playing the role of legendary actress Bette Davis. It’s a pretty major role for her as she admitted in a Hollywood Reporter interview, "I spent the first five weeks completely overwhelmed and terrified," she said. "Eventually the fear-fun ratio started to go in my favor. She's so big and she really was so big, so I tried not to make her a caricature or someone a female impersonator would do. She's been done so much. That was my fear, that she would just be kind of one-dimensional."
