Israel Making a Big Splash in the Crowdfunding Market
It’s hard to believe it’s been over six years since crowdfunding sites like Indiegogo and Kickstarter have come to fruition, changing the way products go-to-market. These sites have become integral conduits for launching a pre-campaign and allowing “real” people to get in on the action and invest in innovative products in exchange for being part of the exclusive “first” to get the product when it goes to production.
And it’s these crowdfunding sites that have led dreamers, inventors, and entrepreneurs to create visibility for their technological innovation. Until now, these companies would have otherwise gone unrecognized as the world would continue to wait expectantly for the global tech giants like Apple, Samsung, Microsoft, etc. to launch the next big thing.
Israel, well-known as the startup nation, has of course caught the crowdfunding bug and become a hotspot for crowdfunding campaigns exhibiting an inspiring amount of high tech products that range from voice activated light bulbs (Vocca) to touchscreen game controllers (Zrro) and even a laser controlled pen that will allow you to write on any surface (Phree).
With so many notable campaigns we felt it important to highlight just a few of the very successful Israeli campaigns that have closed on Kickstarter and Indiegogo.
Sensibo is a hassle-free upgrade to your home AC unit. Lead by CEO Omer Enbar, Sensibo created a $79 pod that attaches to your AC unit and allows it to be controlled via smartphone, over the internet. Their Indiegogo campaign raised over $170,000 and they have already started shipping the first boxes of Sensibo to its backers. Their success is due in large part because of the hilarious and award winning campaign video, made by Tross Creative House, in which Sensibo goes over and over “the installation process.”
PowerUp 3.0, one of the most playful Kickstarters out there turns an everyday paper airplane into a remote controlled flying machine. Just attach the bluetooth-controlled battery and propeller to any standard paper airplane, and within seconds you’ve turned an old-fashioned glider into a powerful flyer. Apart from the fun technology, PowerUp also has made a name for itself because of its remarkable $1.2 million campaign despite its $50,000 goal.
However, crowdfunding is useful for more than fancy gadgets: Rewalk is a robotic exoskeleton that allows paraplegics and spinal cord injury victims to ditch the wheelchair and walk more naturally. This cutting-edge technology would not have been possible without the $1.3 million campaign from OurCrowd in 2013. Rewalk’s exoskeleton has been FDA approved and is currently on the market in the U.S., Israel, and Europe. We will be hearing their story this year at The Israel Conference™, October 21-22, 2015.
There’s also the ambitious SCIO from Consumer Physics. Worried whether the apple you are about to bite into is fresh? Or if Monday’s medication dosage is accurate? SCIO promises to scan everyday objects and tell you their exact chemical makeup. SCIO ranks as the highest funded product on our list, hauling in $2.7M from Kickstarter. The scanner sounds like something out of science fiction, but CEO, Dror Sharon, has proven it works, and we cannot wait for it to hit the market in the next few months.
We at The Israel Conference™ love to see so many innovative products crowdfunding out Israel, and to get in on the “real time” action we hope to see you at the conference on October 20-21, in Los Angeles at the Skiriball Cultural Center.
