The philosophy of Cosmicism is a worldview rooted in the idea that humanity is insignificant in the vast, indifferent cosmos. It was developed and popularized by American writer H. P. Lovecraft, who expressed it through literature rather than formal philosophy — yet its ideas form a coherent metaphysical stance about existence, meaning, and knowledge.
1. Core Idea
Cosmicism holds that:
The universe is immense, ancient, and indifferent to human concerns.
Human beings are cosmically insignificant — our values, gods, and moral systems mean nothing in the larger cosmic order.
There is no inherent meaning or purpose to the universe. Any sense of order is an illusion created by the human mind to cope with the incomprehensible.
In essence, it is a metaphysical nihilism combined with awe toward the unknowable vastness of existence.
2. Philosophical Roots
Though Lovecraft was not a professional philosopher, Cosmicism resonates with several major traditions:
Existentialism: Like Sartre and Camus, it confronts a meaningless universe — but Cosmicism denies even the existentialist’s freedom to create meaning.
Nihilism: Denies objective value, morality, or purpose.
Naturalism & Materialism: The cosmos operates by impersonal natural laws, without divine or moral structure.
Skepticism: Human knowledge is profoundly limited; the universe’s true nature is ultimately beyond comprehension.
3. Key Concepts
A. Cosmic Indifference
The universe neither loves nor hates us — it simply is. Humanity’s existence is accidental, not central.
B. The Insignificance of Humanity
Our civilizations, beliefs, and achievements are fleeting specks in deep time. Cosmicism denies anthropocentrism — the belief that humans are the measure of all things.
C. Forbidden Knowledge
Lovecraft’s stories often portray the human mind’s collapse when it encounters truths beyond comprehension — symbolizing the limits of reason.
D. Anti-Theism
Not atheism (the denial of gods), but anti-theism: if cosmic entities exist, they are utterly indifferent — or even hostile — to human notions of good and evil.
4. Aesthetic Dimension
Cosmicism isn’t just intellectual — it’s existentially emotional. It produces what Lovecraft called “cosmic horror”: the terror and wonder that arise when one glimpses humanity’s fragility within an incomprehensible universe.
Rather than despair, Cosmicism invites a strange awe — a humility before the infinite.
5. In Short
The philosophy of Cosmicism is the realization of human smallness before the infinite, impersonal universe.
It teaches that:
The cosmos does not revolve around us, and our deepest fears and hopes are whispers in the void.
Yet in that insignificance, Cosmicism finds a kind of dark wisdom: freedom from illusion, and a clear-eyed view of reality stripped of comforting myths.
Wylde Labs, also known as Doctor Wylde's Laboratory, is the home of the Wylde family and a top secret facility hidden in the mountains. It's actually built into the mountains themselves, with much of the laboratory located underground.
The laboratory is heavily guarded on all sides by thick stone walls and powerful defensive batteries, ranging from sniper nests to anti-air missile launchers, not to mention the countless automatons constantly patrolling the grounds. The interior is also guarded with automatons patrolling the halls and various turrets hidden in the ceiling. The paths to and from the laboratory are extremely easy to miss if you don't know what you're looking for, and to even enter the place without being captured or killed you need permission, proof of permission, and ideally an appointed guide who's already familiar with the area and trusted by the guards. This guide is usually either one of the staff or a member of the Wylde family.
Anyone and everyone who enters the facility must first swear an oath of secrecy that what they see and do in the facility (pertaining to the work done in the lower levels) stays in the facility. Because of this, it's unclear what exactly they do in there. Some say the lab researches the various life forms, commonly referred to as "monsters," that have survived and adapted to Copper 9's eternal winter and poisonous atmosphere. Others say they build weapons and put them up for auction on the black market. No one knows for certain, though.
The mountain range that houses and hides the laboratory is an hour's drive north of the old city near Outpost 3.
Well, hello hello hello, all you beautiful people! I am Mod Andy, but you can call me Mod for short and to get my attention instead of the character Andy. The other way to get my attention is to simply go out of character.
This is my Murder Drones roleplay account. I will be using my Cosmic Indifference AU in this RP, which you can find the lore for over on @wylde-lore. If you wanna catch me fully OOC you can find me on my main blog, @how-and-why-do-i-know-this.
Now when it comes to RPing with me, I got a few rules to keep in mind:
Crossovers of all kinds are welcome.
This one isn't a rule so much as it is a heads-up: Though I focus primarily on Murder Drones and use Murder Drones characters and OCs, this blog is technically multi-fandom and I do have characters here that aren't of that universe.
No explicit NSFW, though suggestive jokes and a fade to black/off-Tumblr approach to smexy times are ok.
Asks that make me uncomfortable or are explicitly NSFW will be deleted.
Bigotry of any kind will not be tolerated.
Please respect my boundaries.
If I do anything that crosses your boundaries or makes you uncomfortable, I highly advise that you tell me so I can fix it.
Don't worry about leaving me hanging. I am very patient, most of the time.
Don't try to control my characters (godmodding) or twist my arm into doing what you want, it won't work on them and I'll either do the complete opposite or drop the rp thread completely.
Now personally I think this last one is a no-brainer and shouldn't need to be spelled out, but since it's actually happened to me on several occasions I'll list it here: Please do not tamper with my lore or try to insert your own characters into it without permission.
And that should be everything! A list of my muses (characters I rp as) and their attached character sheets are below the cut.
Doctor Wylde:
Name: Cedric Arlo Wylde
Alias/titles: Aldia Entrati (deadname), big guy, old fart, Doc, Doctor, The Good Doctor, General, Master, Enlighten
Disclamer: All character sheets under this line are either severely outdated or haven't been written yet.
Natah: Dr. Wylde's mother. Moved into the lab after Earth's destruction. The sweetest old lady you will ever meet. Fantastic cook. Accent of unknown origin.
(translation: Dr. Wylde's split-personality - think Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, but way worse. Where Dr. Wylde is kind, collected, and diplomatic, Janus is sadistic, crazed, and violent. Born when @theblackcubeofdarkness Smiles drove Dr. Wylde insane - albeit temporarily. Dr. Wylde is aware of Janus' existence, and tries to keep him away from everyone else as much as he can for their safety. However, Janus can be coaxed out to "play" if Dr. Wylde's mental state deteriorates enough. Australian accent. Found primarily on @dr-wylde-and-janus. His full character sheet can also be found there (WIP).)
Emma Eclipse Wylde: Demigoddess. Daughter of Dr. Wylde and @xen-or-xavier-wylde. A psychopath like her father. As bubbly as she is violent. Too young to have her own blog (and I have enough as it is), so she's going in this one. Australian accent.
Odin: Hex-tech android and Dr. Wylde's assistant. Much too busy for romance. Accent-less robot voice.
Belnar Runehide: 𝕎𝕀ℙ
Kieran: WIP
Slyvan: Dr. Wylde's pet serpent. A-tier monster. Loves boops, pets, rubs, and cuddles. Hates being called stinky or spaghetti. Very motherly. Sssnake accent.
Rodney: WIP
Alice: WIP
Serial Designation J: WIP
Evelyn Wylde: Demihuman. Dr. Wylde's granddaughter. Bisexual murder-happy tomboy. Powerful pyromancer. Has a phoenix familiar named Sol. Dating @doll-the-zombie-drone Australian accent. Found primarily in @evelyn-wylde. Her full character sheet can also be found there in the pinned post.
Beeftongue: WIP
Lucy: WIP
Oswald Universe Wylde: Disassembly Drone. Son of Dr. Wylde and @emily-and-friends R. Obsessed with Scotland. Much less murdery than his sister Emma, and the voice of reason between the two of them. Too young to have his own blog (and I have enough as it is), so he's going in this one. Scottish accent.
Andy: WIP
Sarah: WIP
Hilda: WIP
Delilah: 𝕎𝕀ℙ
Lily: WIP
Kelsey: ᴡɪᴘ
Cephalon Eda: աɨք
Cyn: Surprisingly, @solvar-the-drone was only at stage four at the time of her "fight" against The Abhorrent. After removing her AI core, Dr. Wylde was able to isolate and extract the real Cyn. Having been purged of the Absolute Solver and given both a new body and a second chance, she now spends her time working tirelessly to undue the damage she's caused and atone for the atrocities she committed as the AS' host. Despises the AS for ruining her life and using her body to turn her friends and family into "monsters". Believes herself to also be a monster for what she's done, despite not having been in control of her actions. Iconic Solver voice, though it now has some emotion to it. When she is overcome with emotion (crying, pissed off, etc.), her voice goes back to the way it was pre-corruption.
Sol: WIP
Elizabeth: Formerly a human, now a Worker Drone. She was murdered by @james-comes-back's friend Simon, but thankfully her consciousness was successfully transferred to a Drone body - specifically one that looks exactly like Lizzy. Dr. Wylde's secretary, the lab's receptionist, and the one who runs the blog. A bit of a workaholic, and in love with @emily-r-and-eva Eva. Calls everyone "love." British accent.
Lizzy: WIP
Asmodeus: Ancient vampire, and Infernal Legion deserter. He and Dr. Wylde met during the Fell War, and have been friends ever since. Greater monster. A caretaker of sorts for the experiments. Romanian accent.
Let's start things off by taking a step back. We are stuck in a hole beneath the ice and stone. It's boring here. Let's see the sights this planet has to offer.
...Hmm, strange. Did Uzi and her crew get smaller? Well, it's probably nothing to worry about.
Let's take another step back. Copper 9 implies that it's the 9th planet in this system. What are the others like? Do they have Drones? Are they plagued by Disassembly Drones and Solver infections?
Ok, the main cast is definitely smaller now. As if they're... becoming insignificant the farther back we go. But we can't stop now.
Another step back. The Copper system is but a singular solar system among untold trillions, and each and every one has its own stories. The traumas our favorite Drones face are so small from up here.
But what if we went even further? Now we are among not just the universe, but the multiverse. What manner of cosmic beings - gods, even - are out here? How do they perceive the Solver? Is it a great threat to them? Or is it a mere blip in the grand scheme of things? Uzi, N, V, J, Tessa, Khan, Nori, Yeva, Cyn, they are all mere specks of dust from up here, floating adrift in an unfeeling and uncaring universe. And, when you think about it, that's what they are; clumps of cosmic stardust created and given sentience by other dust clumps.
This world is indifferent to the plights of mortals. The gods do not care for the Drones, if they even know they're there. They are wrapped up in grander things. But what are these grander things? By studying the multiverse and the cosmic beings that govern its rules, what can we learn?
What happens when we embrace the Eldritch Truth?
Hihihi! <3 I hope you liked my little intro.
I'm Mod Andy (no that is not my real name) and I've created this blog to share an AU of mine - one that focuses less on the local setting of the show and more on the greater universe that it lives in.
I got a LOT of special interests and my silly little Autism brain won't let me make this AU without cross-contaminating the AU with other stuff that fascinate me, so watch out for stuff like crossovers with other things I like, magic, modern fantasy in general, body horror, lovecraftian horror, eldritch horror, cosmic horror, and good old fashioned existentialism.
In case you can't tell I REALLY like horror. If that's not your cup of tea, I can respect that. I also recommend you start running as far away from me as you can, and as fast as you can.
Now, because I'm not a monster, probably, I will tag my post with the necessary trigger warnings if needed. If I missed a warning on a post, please don't be afraid to let me know.
Oh, and one more thing before I let you go! You can actually find this AU alive and active over on my RP blog, @ask-wylde-and-co. There's also @storytime-with-dr-wylde if you want lore in a story format, and for ooc stuff you can check out my main, @how-and-why-do-i-know-this!
That should be everything for now. I'll see you all later in your nightmares! <3
The End That Travels at the Speed of Light
Empty space may sit above a deeper state. A look at vacuum decay, Higgs metastability, and the contemplative tradition that named the void first....

I wake to light that doesn’t ask permission,
my body’s weight still tethered to the bed,
the coffee maker’s slow, indifferent mission—
I swallow something sharp I haven’t said.
Outside, the century rehearses new disasters,
the script unchanged, the fresh hell and its dead,
the glaciers calving faster, ever faster,
while somewhere children wait for promised bread.
But look: a wren has built…
