Romeo v Juliet Ficlet

title: the one where Alex and Ray move out.

summary: Alex and Ray talk about making a life-changing decision.

notes: y’all this made me cry so damn hard. Especially because I wrote this right after watching the episode and I just--I have so many feelings. And this is actually going to be the last chapter ever of cosmic strings, and I just...I can’t believe I now have an actual endpoint for this story. I can’t believe Ray Palmer is gone.

Ray picked up the frame holding the picture of him and Alex on their wedding day. It was time. They both knew it.

Alex wasn't happy here anymore. And neither was he.

Before, things had been relatively easy. But after Crisis…well he didn't know how they were still functioning, to be honest.

She stirred awake and Ray turned around to catch a glimpse of his sleepy wife. He chuckled. 

Wife.

Two years and he still couldn't believe he got to call her that. 

Two years. 

They had a son, a daughter on the way. 

He couldn't take any more risks. Not after what happened.

He wanted a life. He wanted to be there for his kids.

It was time to hang up the Atom suit.

"Hey," She murmured softly, a sleepy smile on her face as she moved to envelop him in a hug, her head resting on his shoulder. "I remember that picture," She smiled fondly, taking the frame from his shaking hands. "It was the very first one of us as a couple."

The two of them chuckled, recalling how eager Leo was to take the photo. Everyone had been there. It was perfect.

They had handed them out to everyone. Even Mick had stolen an extra two or three.

"Times were much simpler then," Ray responded wistfully, placing the picture back on the glass shelf, "When we only had one hell demon to worry about."

"Hey," Alex's tone shifted into a more concerned one, "Talk to me, what's up?"

Her hands brushed his neck, shivers erupting down his back at her soft touch. He lifted his hands to meet hers, pulling them down so they were level with his waist.

"I've been thinking about what you said," He gulped, hoping he was making the right decision, "About the Waverider feeling like a completely different planet to you."

"That was weeks ago--"

Ray cut her off, "I just--I want to do it."

Alex's eyebrows creased, the dimple near the edge of her lips creasing as she frowned in confusion.

"You were right," He continued, "About me wanting a family, but I have one." Ray paused, letting the pressure burst behind his eyes, "You and Steven…you're my family. And I want to come home to you guys."

Alex's frown began to turn upward into a faint smile, the sentiment clearly striking her in the right places. "Ray, just because I feel one way doesn't mean you should give up everything you've built here."

"Everything we've built." He emphasized, leaning closer, "And I'm not giving it up," He protested, trying to come up with an optimistic point of view for the situation, "I'm doing one last mission and then I'm taking my final bow," Ray decided dramatically, puffing up his chest and gaining a laugh from his wife.

"One last mission huh?" Alex's lips grew wider, her teeth poking through.

Ray nodded. "And then I come home."

Alex moved closer, pressing her head underneath his chin and wrapping him in her arms.

"And then you come home."

Ask Ethan: Could The Fabric Of Spacetime Be Defective?

“The topic I'd like to suggest is high-energy relics, like domain walls, cosmic strings, monopoles, etc... it would be great to read more about what these defects really are, what their origin is, what properties they likely have, or, and this is probably the most exciting part for me, how we expect them to look like and interact with the 'ordinary' universe.”

So, you’d like to ruin the fabric of your space, would you? Similar to tying a knot in it, stitching it up with some poorly-run shenanigans, running a two-dimensional membrane through it (like a hole in a sponge), etc., it’s possible to put a topological defect in the fabric of space itself. This isn’t just a mathematical possibility, but a physical one: if you break a symmetry in just the right way, monopoles, strings, domain walls, or textures could be produced on a cosmic scale. These could show up in a variety of ways, from abundant new, massive particles to a network of large-scale structure defects in space to a particular set of fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background. Yet when it comes time to put up or shut up, the Universe offers no positive evidence of any of these defects. Save for one, that is: back in 1982, there was an observation of one (and only one) event consistent with a magnetic monopole. 35 years later, we still don’t know what it was.

It’s time to investigate the possibilities, no matter how outlandish they seem, on this week’s Ask Ethan!
