I first heard of Prangsta when I found a really fantastic magazine editorial in ‘Pigeons and Peacocks’ magazine in 2012, with lots of colour, lots of glitter, lots of feathers and lots of makeup! The only credits were to Masha Mel photography and to Prangsta Costumiers who I decided were amazing; but in adding them to my art foundation research file, I didn’t find much information on at the time.

Four years or so later, I found Prangsta again whilst in the early stages of my research for my this-year’s ‘final year project’. Because I wanted my textiles to be dramatic, exciting and fun, I figured that they were more than high street, and mainly inspired by a combination of lingerie (such as Agent Provocateur and La Perla), and my desire to be able to create costumes for stage dancers that complement and enhance the female form in an impactful way- I wanted to find the designers behind this market. 

I definitely found that this was no easy task, and it seemed to me that finding the names behind the creation of amazing stage costumes was like trying to find out the actual song writers behind the UK top 20. 

Prangsta however was very ‘up-there’, and I was thrilled to find that they actually did costume making courses over several weeks. 

Star struck by the amazing work and reputation of Prangsta; eager to learn how to make a corset; and most of all intrigued to enter the world behind the designs, I planned to commit to paying for the course. 

The studio was amazing, full to the ceiling of costumes, huge skirts, embellishment and rich and colourful fabrics, and I’d never been in such an Aladdin’s cave before in my life. 

On chatting to Mel, the founder of Prangsta, I was lucky that she was keen for interns doing work experience, and I spent every Thursday for several weeks appliquéing and beading embellishment on to a beautiful vintage leotard to mask the wear and tear of time. 

I learnt how to pattern cut and tailor fit a corset with boning. This was my first ever garment construction from scratch which was so exciting, only so infuriating to have to wait six days between each lesson as I was desperate to finish!

The studio was amazing, the Prangsta team were fantastic and I really value the experience that I had there.

6 weeks with Prangsta.

‘Costumiers for cabaret, catwalks and carnivals. Fancy and fanciful dress from vintage to vogue.’ I couldn’t think of a better way to describe Prangsta Costumiers than with what they say themselves.

I was recently lucky enough to do 6 weeks of work experience in the studio of Prangsta. With the help of Melanie Wilson and the team, or more accurately ‘the family’, I was able to really improve on my dressmaking and millenary skills. My first project was a hat, to match a pink and gold clown suit that has been very popular in the shop. As a way to reinvent it, I was given the opportunity to make this matching accessory, which was a bit daunting since it was the first hat I’ve ever made, and to have it hired is a big deal! But I couldn’t be more pleased with how it turned out. What I thought would be a terrible task turned into me being guided the whole way by Mel’s knowledge and teachings. I was taken through each process, and was left to do it in my own time frame, which kept the pressure off. And now, the finished hat is sitting proud in the New Cross Prangsta shop.

I was also able to help with smaller tasks, such as stitching gold spikes to various dresses; so much so, that I was dreaming about doing it, and also starting a beautiful gold coat. But I’d say the most useful things I learned were the small things, like learning how to properly use a thimble, and how to create the right shape in a hat, and how brilliant Coats Epic thread is!

 The studio is the stuff dreams are made of, with props, hats, dresses, and beautiful fabric, up to the ceiling. A million things are always happening, but somehow it never feels like there are, because every person there is doing what they need to do. Everyone who is involved in Prangsta made me feel so welcome and wanted; they create this lovely, inviting atmosphere - that’s why I call them a family: a family of hard workers.

I have never seen a small team of people that work so hard – from the apprentices to the employees. No costume is half taken care of, or done to an ‘acceptable’ standard. The care and attention each person takes when creating a garment, accessory, or hat, is mind blowing. Once you’ve seen the workshop you’ll understand, but until then, take my word for it.

They offer evening classes, hen do’s, the most amazing intern and apprenticeships, and a Boudoir that is to die for!

I am so thankful for working with Prangsta and I wish them the best of luck with everything they do and I know I wont ever go anywhere else for a hire costume.

Sands Picture Library and Film Studio

Sands Fim Studios made Little Dorrit, they are also costumiers for other films and events / exhibitions. They are also a picture library. Sited in an old warehouse with re-used 17th-century ships timbers. They have film clubs and events and provide refreshment...
