Statement

The statement does not list a cause of death, and a spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Resources, which oversees the state coroner's office, said state law allows the agency to release autopsy information only to relatives and police. Palmer, 55, from Cottageville, was in police custody and uncooperative during the booking process at South Central Regional Jail, where he was arrested after being charged with attempted murder and intentional assault on his sister, according to the statement. Wanda Palmer was in a coma in a nursing home for two years. She was found unconscious with severe head injuries at her Jackson County home on June 10, 2020. Daniel Palmer had been identified as a suspect, but by the time she awoke from her coma, investigators didn't have enough evidence to press charges, according to court documents. "Due to a past history of violence between Wanda Palmer and her brother Daniel Palmer, investigators initially considered Daniel a suspect in the assault," said a criminal complaint filed in Jackson County District Court.

Investigations

Investigators questioned Daniel, who denied any involvement in the attack and said he had not been to his sister's house in days. A witness later told investigators he saw Daniel at the front door of Wanda Palmer's trailer the night she was attacked. On June 27, more than two years after the attack, a female officer received a call from a security agent who claimed she had started speaking simple words and appeared to be responsive to questions. On July 12, officials traveled to Genesis Healthcare in New Martinsville to speak with Wanda Palmer. Deputy Julia Bowen "entered Wanda's room alone and began speaking to her," according to the complaint. “Bowen asked Wanda open-ended questions. Wanda said she remembers living in her trailer near her mother's house. She stated that she remembered being injured there. He mentioned his head. Wanda Palmer said the person who hurt her was her brother and she identified him as Daniel. Asked during the interview about the reason for the attack, "Wanda claimed it was bad," according to the complaint. Wanda Palmer "appeared oriented to her situation. Her answers to questions were consistent and to the point. She asked for prayer." Daniel Palmer was held on $500,000 bail. He was so combative when he was arrested that it took hours to get him to cooperate with authorities on a subpoena that required a judge to leave a courthouse and come to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, WCHS TV reported.
