Protect your skin: a guide to the best sunscreen this summer
It’s getting hot out there and protecting your skin is a must, especially your face. As someone who hates to have anything on her face, blaming the many years of piling on layers of stage makeup as a dancer, I have realized that skincare is a must. I’ve seen firsthand the damage the sun can do to your skin, like premature aging, dark spots, and skin cancer. As a 40-ish-year-old, I am not down…

A Millennial Esthetician’s Pandemic Skincare Routine
2020 was a harrowing experience for me and for everyone. This post is in no way meant to make light of the pandemic or anyone’s situation. That being said, staying at home did not bring my skin issues to a halt. Changes to my skin occurred along with drastic life changes. For me, the year was more about survival than self-care, but in the moments that I had time or felt well enough to care for…

Sunscreen
I wear sunscreen like a talisman, protection from something harmful if not relished in moderation. It came to mind recently that the powerful regeneration of being among the elements should not come at a cost to our skin — our largest, most exposed organ. Perhaps this explains why I used to think it was reserved for days spent at the beach, half-dressed and seemingly most susceptible to the sun. Now, however, my philosophy has shifted from the occasional SPF application to a conscious daily ritual, because realistically we are always prone to sun damage, a languorous day at the beach or otherwise.
The most beneficial sunscreens for our bodies are mineral or “physical” SPFs. These formulations contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which physically block the sun’s UVA and UVB rays that cause risks such as skin cancer and hyperpigmentation. Chemical sunscreens work differently, absorbing the sun rays rather than reflecting them, and evidence suggests they can harm our endocrine systems and the environment. In fact, Hawaii recently banned sunscreens containing the ingredient and potential hormone disruptor oxybenzone due to its harmful effects on coral reefs. While it has been tested and proven that chemicals such as oxybenzone and octinoxate cause detrimental effects to coral, a recent article published by Harvard Medical’s Health Journal explained that there is not enough conclusive evidence to determine that the latter chemicals are harmful to humans, though there is still much debate on the topic.
Wearing the SPF of your choice everyday doesn’t have to mean suffocating or hiding your skin beneath a thick, white cast. On the contrary, I believe a good sunscreen can be an undetectable base for the day’s look, a multi-beneficial step that can prime your skincare and beauty regimes while protecting you in the process. In essence, it can feel as organic and enhancing as slipping on the piece of clothing that makes you feel the most yourself.
Below are my favorite sunscreen products I’ve tried (not sponsored) and all have cruelty-free, paraben-free, and oxybenzone-free claims. I have a sensitive, dry skin type and none have clogged my pores or caused my skin to react negatively.
My top two:
-CōTZ Sensitive Mineral Sunscreen SPF 40
-Supergoop Skin Soothing Mineral Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 40*
Top SPF makeup:
-Cle Cosmetics CCC Cream SPF 50+*
-Brush on Block (not as effective as a lotion or balm, but good for setting makeup and touching up)
-Petiue SPF Highlighter SPF 45*
*An asterisk denotes that octinoxate is in the ingredient list.
I’m always doing skincare studies, so what else should I know about? Send me a note with your favorite tried and true products.
