Was Count Vertigo ever a hero? I feel like I read a story where he was the good guy.

Sort of. Vertigo was a central player in John Ostrander's seminal run writing Suicide Squad. It was clear that Ostrander and co-writer Kim Yale were quite fond of Vertigo and gave him a lot of excellent scenes.

Count Vertigo wasn't exactly a hero in the traditional sense in these stories, rather more of a main character/antihero. Vertigo suffered from pretty severe depression in these comics and Ostrander and Yale did a fantastic job exploring his struggles.

Luke McDonnell provided the pencils for many of these issues. He gave Vertigo a more chiseled and handsome appearance which likely contributed to his coming across as a more traditional comic book good guy.

Count Vertigo

Werner Vertigo (also known as Werner Zytle) is the son of wealthy aristocrats from the small European nation called Vlatava. A civil war caused the family to flee and relocate to Canada. In his childhood young Werner suffered from a debilitating inner ear disorder that severely impacted his balance. His parents spent what money they had left to provide Werner a specialized surgery in which an electronic device was implanted on his temple that acted to compensate for his difficulties, allowed him to maintain his balance.

In his young adulthood, Werner discovered that tinkering with this device allowed him to exude a radiating field that caused anyone in the vicinity to experience debilitating feelings of vertigo. Fashioning himself a costume, Werner decided to use this ability to commit crimes. He dubbed himself ‘Count Vertigo’ and traveled to Star City where he attempted to steal back the jewelry his mother had sold in order to pay for his implant. This resulted in a confrontation between Count Vertigo and the team of Green Arrow and Black Canary.

This was the first of numerous encounters between the villain and Green arrow. Count Vertigo was defeated by Green Arrow and sent to prison. He soon thereafter recruited into the Task Force X program and went on to serve in numerous iterations of The Suicide Squad. He has additionally acted as a member of Checkmate. Following the Nu52 reboot, Vertigo was reintroduced as the corrupt leader of the Vlatava, ruling the nation as a criminal enterprise (and agains facing off against Green Arrow).

Two different version of Count Vertigo have appeared in the Arrow television series, the first portrayed by actor Seth Gabel and the second played by actor Peter Stormare. Actors Michael York and Steve Blum have voiced the villain in DC animated projects.

Count Vertigo first appeared in the pages of World's Finest Comics #251 (1978).
