New Jersey's First Latina County Prosecutor

Camelia Valdes was recently appointed as the Passaic county prosecutor. She is New Jersey's first Latina to be appointed to the post, as well as the first Dominican-American prosecutor. Valdes is very much making history with her new appointment and she has already made many very proud of her. Of her appointment Valdes has said that "its a tremendous honor to be the first Latina to be named a county prosecutor, and there's a tremendous burden that comes with that. But I feel that I am up to the challenge".

Valdes was born in the Bronx, New York to Dominican parents and was raised in Newark, New Jersey. A graduate of Rutger's Law School, throughout her career she has dedicated herself to serving the state of New Jersey. Before her current appointment,Valdes was the former President of the New Jersey Hispanic Bar Association, as well as deputy attorney general with the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General. With all her experience, it is quite obvious that Valdes is very competent as an attorney. Martin Perez, founder of the Latino Leadership Alliance of New Jersey, stated  “She’s very dependable and has a good personality. She will make us proud". Camelia Valdes will be breaking even further barriers in a year where the first African-American took office as the president of the United States and Sonia Sotomayor is the first Latina to be nominated for Supreme Court Justice. Her appointment signifies a step forward for Latinos as our communities move into the mainstream as well as a historic moment for Dominican-Americans in the country.
