Noodlot
Day 10 - January 10, 2019 Acrylic paint, indian ink, and pencil on paper, 15x21 cm. ‘Noodlot’ is the title of a Dutch book (literature) by Louis Couperus (1890) I read during my study of the Dutch language. It means ‘Fate’. The painting is based on the first sentence in the book: “His hands in the pockets, the collar of his fur coat up, Frank walked through the blowing snow, along the lonely Adelaide Road in the evening.” (Google translate Dutch-English). First time I worked with acrylic paint. Because I’m not a good ‘real life’ artist, I followed an online class to learn to to draw lines of action. The first line I mad was with a oencil. After that I took my dip pen and made some extra lines.
I kinda liked it, so I decided to give it some color with acrylic paint. That was awful, because I don’t know anything about colors at all.
I wanted to throw it in the garbage bin, but decided to put on a new layer of paint. And a new one. And... Well, finally it was finished.

- Esmeralda, I crossed the hell for you, through seas of black, oceans of pitch, through the hurricanes of fire, through craters and caverns of scarlet and yellow, through the azure fires and through the lily white gloom.... And hear me: the Hell answered; VANITY; asking the Juwel: the leviathans roared: VANITY; the chimera's hissed; VANITY; the shadows pealed: VANITY; and the whole lamentation vibrated: VANITY! You hear me, Esmeralda? Your wish was vanity, because the mystical Juwel, the Giver of all the Godly Almightyness is: VANITY, and: .... DOES NOT EXCIST.
Passage from Psyche - Louis Couperus 1897
- I am going from infinity to infinity; I come from nothingness and I am going to nothingness. - What is the nothingness? - It is everything. The nothingness is as far as your little brain can think, my dear princess, and even farther, and the nothingness is more than all you can see from up in this high castle.... - Why are you flying from the one end to the other, o beautiful Chimera? What is your goal? Why are you? - What is your own goal, little Psyche? Why are you? Why are the flowers, the people, the stars? Who knows? - Astra .... - No. Astra knows nothing. Her science is based on a first guess. All her science is like a tower, that will come down.
Passage from ‘Psyche’ by Loius Couperus 1898
.... Stop crying, and go to sleep, and if you can not sleep, I will tell you a fairytale, a beautiful tale of flowers and gemstones and birds, and of a young prince and a little princess.... Because that is all there is in the world, it is just a fairytale ....
Metamorfose, Louis Couperus 1897
