"Never ending...fight!"
You found me But I don't know why you wanna save me Well God is great and God is good But God didn't help me when he could And love dances slowly by
All that you'll find inside are pills and butterflies But I'll be smiling when I die
This is just a courtesy call This is just a matter of policy This is just an act of kindness To let you know that your time is up

Tearing his gaze from the stretch of all too familiar road ahead of them, Cade glanced at the pup in the passenger seat. Jordan’s attention was out the window, on the trees and streets that passed in a blur. Her feet were on the dashboard, her elbow perched on the sill as she rested her cheek on the heel of her palm. Relaxed as she looked, tension was coming off of her in waves.
He moved his gaze back onto the road ahead. “This won’t take long,” assured the alpha, the words as heavy as the weight in his chest. Not that Jordan seemed to notice. Tightening his grip on the steering wheel, he muttered, “You just keep silently glaring at the scenery, kid. It sure is pretty.”
A huff breezed out of Jordan and he felt the corner of his mouth twitch.
Roseville was pretty. Too pretty. The kind of picture perfect town that only existed in Hallmark movies. Though, with all the preternatural bullshit that went on under the surface, it was a town better suited for horror movies. But it was home… Fuck. It was home, and he was back. It wasn’t the way he’d pictured his grand return to the ever growing bastion he’d been born in, but those big plans had died with his pack. All he had left was the need to make it right, the driving urge to destroy the thing that had destroyed them, and protect the people that had once been his, too.
Cade would’ve come back days sooner but burying an entire pack took time. He glanced again to the young female beside him before clenching his jaw. Knuckles blanched as he gripped the steering wheel tighter, like he was gripping a ledge over yawning oblivion. They were dead. They were all dead. All that was left of the New Haven Wolves could fit in the cab of his beat up Chevy C-10. Alpha for a few decades and this was all he had to show for it. Countless dead and a pup that probably blamed him for it as much as he blamed himself.
She hadn’t said it, not to his face. She didn’t have to. There were no two ways about it. Everyone and everything they’d lost… it was all on him.
From what Soren had told him, Vermont wasn’t the only place with a steady decrease in population. Shit was getting worse fast in Roseville. Bodies were dropping like flies. It wasn’t the kind of threat that had an entire pack slaughtered in a night, but something with the potential to be worse. This threat was going to tear the entire town apart, and Cade had lost too much already. This time he’d do more to save the people he loved, even if it killed him.
A right turn onto a pothole riddled road brought them to a large, multi-story, ranch style house. The pack house, where his parents used to live. Where he grew up. Crescent HQ, or was back in the day. Since the pack house had served as the seat of power for many an alpha, Cade was willing to bet that Ben and Harlow had taken up residence in one of the many rooms. Soren never specified whether or not they’d moved in, and the letters from Noah had been sparse.
Parking in front of the house, Cade turned off the engine with a twist of his wrist and slid the key from the ignition before glancing at the pup beside him. “You ready?”
Instead of answering him, Jordan stared out of the windshield, all wide eyed and impressed.
He thumbed the seat belt loose and it zipped into its compartment with a hiss. Fingers gripped the handle with his encouraging, “Come on. You don’t want to miss the drama. Oh and, while we’re in there, don’t say anything; alright? This ain’t a social call and we won’t be here long.”
He meant it, too. Them stopping by was a courtesy call, nothing more. Fifty years and a massacred pack hadn’t made him any more amenable to the idea of submitting to Ben. He wasn’t going to give up his Alpha status and fall in line; no matter how much his siblings might want him to. All of his siblings. Even Max.
The only reason they’d come into the Outskirts was to make their presence known, out of respect for their ways. After that, they were out. Back into neutral territory to drop Jordan off at the cheapo motel rooms they were holing up in for the next few nights. Until he found them somewhere better, more permanent.
