Apparently what seems to be the origin of Barère's alledged "leave Saint-Just and Couthon out of it" anecdote is a footnote in Courtois 1795 Thermidor anniversary report..?

Considering that said report was made after Barère's fall from grace, it's probably meant to discredit him further by showing him as having wanted to protect two of the "triumvirs" and therefore likely to have been made up, especially since none of the people involved were present to disagree...But it's also difficult for me to not see it as an at least plausible part of Barère's (and tbh any CSP member with political sense) priorities at that point, given everything else about his behaviour and choices leading up to Thermidor (and even partly during the crisis itself).

So even assuming this specific utterance is made up, imo it kind of remains potentially true in spirit (worth mentioning that aside from a dig at SJ for not reading them their report, Billaud also didn't go at him in his speeches during the session either, that was all Collot...And Barère's speech starts out by underlining Saint-Just's adherence to and allegiance with the CSP)🤔
