I go outside like once a week
So if you ask me a while from now “how were your twenties”
All I can tell is that right now
I’m living my life almost exclusively online
I’m living my life through computer screens and instead of talking I’m typing
What can I say it’s going fine
I’m living, I’m living my life virtually but at least in a couple of years I’ll have a degree
I’ve gotten really good at sending emails and tweets
My eyes are kind of sore and I’m squinting in the light, I spent too long reading the lecture notes online
I’m wearing blue light glasses more than the ones I’ve been prescribed
I’m living through computer screens and honestly, virtually feels more real than reality
My bodies just a place to sit my voice is just words on a document
Can anyone hear me, oh wait I’m on mute, I guess that’s fine I’ll have to double check my settings next time
I’m typing more than I speak
When a friend calls me to talk about something other than history I swear it takes me to ecstasy, it’s the sweetest kind, of intimacy, when you talk to me
I’ll say it’s fine at least I’ve got digital literacy, life hasn’t changed that much for me, I’ve been doing this since I was 17 got an extra year to learn without fear
Now it’s mask up, log in, type your answer in a box, no one sees you unless it’s from the shoulder up
I’m my cameras favourite subject because there’s not a whole lot else to photograph but I don’t see me, just a girl in the most general sense
I’m taking notes physically, just to escape real life in reality
I’ve got outfits in my closet I’m yet to wear, I’m dressing up to go nowhere, my biggest event is my own videos
I used to sleep through my alarm but now i don’t even set it, if I have to I can have breakfast at my desk and brush my hair off screen
Just so long as I turn on my mic when it’s my turn to speak
I’d like to go out for a while, just to feel the sun on my face and hope for a smile but 5k isn’t that far to wander and I’ve already been here and there and down yonder
I’m living life through computer screens and honestly, virtually feels more real than reality
I’ve got an endless list of things I’d like to do and a shelf full of books I’ve never read
You’d think I’d have time but the commute across my room is the biggest one yet
I’m just waiting for the controversy of the identity of young people like me, who are stuck behind a hundred screens, and the only footprints they leave are digitally
I’ve got an empty travel journal and I’d like to escape into reality would somebody please come with me?
And I’m weondering if a VR headset would make me less restless while I wait
And I’m wondering why this time feels so much harder I guess after a while you get kind of tired
Time isn’t real and the days are all one
I wish that I could still find this fun but the truth is I’m missing things I’ve never done
I’m feeling kind of lonely but reaching out is hard
I’m limited I don’t really have a choice
I’m living through computer screens and honestly, virtually feels more real than reality
I’m at that funny point in life and history, where much too much and nothing is happening
I promise I’ll remember my twenties
Saved, catalogued, labeled and named
In a memory that’s not mine
It’s all going to the cloud until a more convenient time
Maybe I’ll hang out in reality until I have to go back to real life, behind my computer screen
