Pictures from Persia Cecil Keeling A collection of lithographs taken from Keeling’s drawings whilst serving during WW2. They are not the obvious war images but of the troops, crowds, cafes, beggars and everyday details, even washing in a tent. The comparisons with Bawden are evident and the two illustrated the Queen’s Beasts later in the early 50s. Published in 1946 and lithographed on the plate at Cowell’s. #persia #cecilkeeping #lithography #cowells #edwardbawden https://www.instagram.com/p/Btaj0QzAQNG/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1nq3ayoed0jzd

Extinct Animals Hilary Stebbing Lithographs from her post-war book in the Puffin Picture Book series. It was begun in wartime when she managed to get access to the Natural History Museum (closed at the time) to draw and research her book. It was the first Puffin to be published in hardback, followed by only a few others, and was clearly intended for the schools market. Allen Lane intended all their Puffins to make the transition to hardback but as so many were in advanced production stages on plates that were a different size it became too much of a nightmare, so the idea of a hardback series was abandoned. Not the best decision in hindsight. #puffinpicturebook #hilarystebbing #cowells #extinctanimals #lithography #dinosaursofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/BtxnYdBAfOt/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=18nx5z0uojfs7
Henrietta the Faithful Hen Kathleen Hale autolithograph from her 1943 book for Transatlantic Arts. Hale struggled to escape from her success with the Orlando titles but her other books such as Manda, and Henrietta are well worth a look. Last night I was intrigued to discover from @michaelparkinfineart that other unfinished books exist, all rejected by publishers who only wanted another Orlando. She contributed a memorable episode to Desert Island Discs, which is still available to download. #kathleenhale #orlando #henrietta #hen #autolithography #cowells #desertislanddiscs
Mrs Fowler Kathleen Hale The impoverished Mrs Fowler who lived in a tumble-down cottage with her faithful hen, Henrietta. Gorgeous autolithograph by Hale for her wartime book for Transatlantic Arts, printed at Cowell’s in 1943. Look at that shadow! #kathleenhale #mrsfoster #henriettathefaithfulhen #autolithography #cowells
