Extinct Animals Hilary Stebbing Lithographs from her post-war book in the Puffin Picture Book series. It was begun in wartime when she managed to get access to the Natural History Museum (closed at the time) to draw and research her book. It was the first Puffin to be published in hardback, followed by only a few others, and was clearly intended for the schools market. Allen Lane intended all their Puffins to make the transition to hardback but as so many were in advanced production stages on plates that were a different size it became too much of a nightmare, so the idea of a hardback series was abandoned.
