Lent starts today. Hope you enjoyed your pancakes last night. Are you planning to give up something for Lent? My daughters are but over the years I found this does not really work for me. In recent years the 40 Acts initiative from Stewardship has been more my thing. You are encouraged to do Lent generously by completing a small act of kindness each day for work colleagues, neighbours, friends and family. See the video above for more.
Last summer at New Wine John Mark Comer spoke about spiritual disciplines and noted when we think of spiritual disciplines we think of things we do alone and often they involve giving up something. Fasting and simple living are two that fall into this. Prayer and bible reading involve doing something more but as a spiritual discipline are seen as something you do alone. John made the point that there are spiritual disciplines that involve doing something with others. Going to church is one, a church meal together, breaking bread, justice and generosity.
So if you want to do something this Lent to build your faith, deepen your relationship with God and help you be more like Jesus in more areas of your lives but giving up something does seem to help, then look at other things you could do. As already said there is 40 Acts. Sign up for the emails and have fun being generous this Lent.
Alternatively you could try the Lent Course Calne Partnership of Churches are running. Kicking off with a day this Saturday and then each Thursday through Lent and finishing with a meal on the Monday of Holy week it will follow the Israelites journey from slavery to freedom. During his 40 days in the wilderness Jesus will have mediated on the scriptures and the course will follow the complexites and delights of this story.
