The biggest success story for communism(apart from china ig) is Keralam in India.
after independence, back in 1950 when states were being formally stated and formed Keralam under EMS, adopted a communist form of govt(Marxist),
which mainly included seizing land from landholding land lords and distributing it to the people who used to farm/work and rent the lands from the land horders, and a huge push towards education.
unfortunately for Keralam and EMS, all of this was working a little too well so they ended up under the CIAs watch.
Keralam ended up being a threat to the usamerican idea of freedom, so CIA intervened by pulling the rug from under their feet(or whatever) and basically nuked like 90% of self governance freedom states enjoyed.
which ridiculously reduced what a state could achieve independent of the central government (i.e. CIA forced the Indian government to change their rules. tf actually??)
All of this to say that the only reason they went this route was 100% because they couldn't bomb Keralam like everywhere else(Cuba, Cambodia, Laos etc.....)
