The Children Grow Up So Fast: The 20th Anniversary of X-Men:Children of The Atom
1994 would prove to be a very pivotal year for Capcom and their growing skills in fighting games. In February, Capcom would release Super Street Fighter II: Turbo, a now tournament favorite, a few months later saw the release of Darkstalkers, but in December of 1994, Capcom would release a game that would help define 2D fighting game action, X-Men: Children of Atom. Based loosely on the comic book arc of the same name, X-Men: Children of the Atom (XCOTA for short) was Capcom's second Marvel licensed game after 1993's side scrolling brawler, The Punisher. From its amazing sprite work, emphasis on character traits ,and insane combos, XCOTA definitely stood out from other fighters at time. The game also featured an guest inclusion of Akuma from Street Fighter. These two combinations would help establish one of Capcom's most successful fighting game series: The Marvel Vs. Capcom series and the idea of the Capcom Vs. as a whole. Today, you can see the influential roots of XCOTA in just about every fighting game. From Injustice, Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom, Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, Skullgirls, Super Smash Bros, and the list goes on. 1994 was a very important and great year for fighting games with XCOTA being just another reminder why.
