It's true. I have been reading the Russian Onegin in tandem with Nabokov's translation -- the Russian online, and the Nabokov translation in the two volume edition (only half of the slim volume being the novel in verse, the other half and the full doorstopper of a second volume being laborious, portentous and often delightful commentary and notes). I have been comparing stanza by stanza, but when I want just the single word (Иноплеменные слова, eg) I just go to google translate. And often, its the same as nabokov's. Wilson was making this dismissive analogy in 1965, mind. I wonder of whoever programmed googe translate leaned heavily on Nabokov's bizarre orthography. To this date, сумасбродит is translated by google as "crackbrain." Does anyone, has anyone, ever used the word "crackbrain?"
