Touched up a bit of art from months ago here. I remember not being happy with it at all when I initially posted it. It's not perfect but I think it's decent enough now.
September 21, 2025 - Uniform Crake (Amaurolimnas concolor) Found in a spotty range from southern Mexico though Central America and into parts of South America as far as southeastern Brazil, these crakes live in forests, including swamps and mangroves. They eat earthworms, insects, spiders, small frogs and lizards, seeds, and berries, usually foraging in leaf litter and soft mud. Little is known about their breeding behavior, though they are thought to build loose cup-shaped nests. One nest found in Costa Rica was constructed from leaves in the top of a stump and contained four eggs.

Thinking about Oryx and Crake after reading it for one of my classes this semester… thinking about how no matter how hard Crake tried, he couldn’t get rid of the singing or the dreaming. Thinking about how the Crakers created art, the recreation of Snowman, despite Crake destroying everything about them that would have prompted them to be beautiful and creative.
Thinking about how they made Crake their god, succumbing to the human need for an explanation, for a religion of sorts, despite the only two things Crake never believed in being Nature and God.
Thinking about how Snowman made them human, gave them humanity, by being himself, by being a word person, by his (albeit very limited at times) empathy.
Thinking about how maybe this was Crakes intention the whole time? The plan wasn’t to leave the Crakers to Jimmy because of his inaction, but because he knew Jimmy had something he didn’t, had bested him in one degree.
To rebuild a better humanity, one free of greed and impulse and consumerism and obscenity and violence as Crake designed, he had to leave some human aspect behind in the Crakers.
Thinking a lot about this book.
