🔥 Any unpopular opinions on mage classes in D&D?

I’m a lumper rather than a splitter: one of the things I like about 5e over especially 3e is that the number of base classes is fairly limited and character options are dealt with as archetypes (alternate class feature suites).

In my view, aside from not-technically-a-mage classes (Artificer, Bard [well, pre-5e], etc.), there should be three casting classes:

The Cleric, the Wizard, and the Psion/Sorcerer.

These more or less correspond to standard trichotomies you see come up time and again in classifying magical practices in both folklore and fiction: mediumship/theurgy, miscellaneous esotericism/occultism, and (often wild) psychic talent, respectively. They’ve been present in one form or another since OD&D (psionics debuted in Supplement III: Eldritch Wizardry).

Now, I recognize that at this point this isn’t a practical idea, at least not with D&D. There’s been enough growth in one-time character variants turned full classes (e.g., Druid, Warlock) that trying to put them back into subclasses wouldn’t really work. You’d lose too much or you’d end up creating vastly overpowered things.

I have seen it! I thought it was good. It started off a bit slow, but picked up. I wouldn’t say it was the best Marvel movie though in my opinion. But def worth a watch bc MCU finally has a female lead superhero. What about you?

Other people visit sometimes but that’s the core.

19. Do you or your party have any dice superstitions?

I have my one and only black and red d20 but the players usually use different die everytime, picking in the Dice Box the one that feels the best at the moment.

35. How much roleplay do you like to do?

Not sure if the question is about hours per week of roleplaying or about how much roleplaying I like in a game (vs rolling dice/describing what’s happening)

As much as possible. I could play almost every freaking evening (or like 5 times a week). Also, I love when the characters (both PC and NPC) are discussing and just living their (adventurous) lives without being interrupted by dice. As a DM I find it very satisfing to see a total immersion in the game.
