Marauder’s Map Inspiration
What is Lupin’s initial inspiration for the Marauder’s Map is because McGonagall’s “you’re late” speech hasn’t changed one iota since she started teaching?
Like, here’s first year Lupin, exhausted with the full moon coming and late for class, being harangued by his Transfiguration teacher - a subject he hates on principle because doesn’t he have to deal with transformation enough - who first considers turning him into a watch and then a map.
And he’s sitting down, embarrassed at being called out like that, when it hits him, ‘A map would be rather useful.’ Not being turned into one, of course, but having one of the castle. But he checks and nothing like that exists, so he starts one himself.
And he’s eleven and doesn’t know much magic yet, so at first it’s just drawn out on parchment. A different sheet for each level of the castle, though he frequently has to attach addendum pieces to the various levels for all the stuff that is multiple stuff - the addendum piece for the door that goes different places different days was a pain in the ass.
The whole thing quickly becomes unwieldy, so he starts looking into magical map making. Between books in the library - why are so many cartography books in the Restricted Section, he grumbles to himself as he gets yet another permission slip signed - and Sirius and James’s penchant for crazy ideas that work (though he learns not to try them on the map itself first, the first fire taught him that) the Marauder’s Map takes shape.
And they think they’re being sneaky, but there’s McGonagall occasionally watching them, glad someone finally took the damn hint.
