My crazy pills got upped so that means I’m about to turn into the biggest whore or I’m going to off myself. Shooting for the latter ❤️
It turns out my plans for a break have changed. The people I report to you about are not going to sit back and enjoy the holidays the way you and yours will. Their idea of a fun time is pulling the back legs off a grasshopper and then throwing their chosen victim onto a red ant pile that they have deliberately riled up. So they can watch the death of an innocent creature and smile. So they can get their jollies. And they’re just fine about doing this in public, letting you see the bottomless depths of their corruption and criminality. For them, doing so is a big Fuck You. It’s the playground bully daring you to do something about it. It’s why following the news feels like swallowing crazy pills.
We grew up thinking our world was right side up; even as we grew older and realized all was not as we had been told when we were younger, we still believed there were mores and norms of behavior that even the worst had to follow. Barry Goldwater did go to the White House and tell Richard Nixon that he would be impeached and convicted for his crimes, and Richard Nixon did resign and leave office. But it now feels as if it’s all been turned upside down.
We are now led by the most loathsome human being ever to occupy the White House - a hollow, squalid, ogre-in-chief. A petty-minded, grasping criminal with a bottomless need to exact revenge on all those who failed to recognize his amazing genius - all of us.
His toadies want to call the Department of Defense the Department of War and turn it into an organization whose proper role is promoting and defending the idea that a “Good American Soldier” is someone who would obey an illegal order to commit a war crime without hesitation or question.
The Department of Justice sees its proper role as harassing and repressing political opponents of the administration.
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sees its proper role as rebuilding and defending the system of White Privilege it was originally created to end.
The Department of Health and Human Services sees its proper role as denying scientific knowledge and promoting policies that increase disease outbreaks.
The Department of the Treasury considers its proper role to be the destruction of fiscal stability.
Every part of government has been turned upside down from its original purpose and is now dedicated to making that government not work, to the destruction of the government.
These are not the acts of conservatives. These are the deeds of reactionaries. We need to start calling them what they are. A conservative wants to move forward with care; a reactionary wants to return to a time that never existed as they claim it did.
It is as though we have all become actors in the original Star Trek episode in which the crew of the Enterprise confront the anti-crew of the anti-Enterprise.
We now have to deal with a situation in which words no longer mean what we think they do. An act of outrage is followed by adulation rather than accountability. The standards we grew up to believe in are shifting and flickering as they vanish.
The institutions we once believed would defend our democracy and save us from a situation like we find ourselves in has failed. A “journalist” hired as political commissar for a legendary network - despite her lack of qualifications to do so - pulls what is perhaps the most important story to be broadcast this year - an expose of how low this administration can go in its perversion of justice - hours before its broadcast after Trump expresses his displeasure with the broadcast. The replacement is a fawning interview with the man most personally responsible for promoting the perversion of justice that was to be exposed. Other “guardrail” institutions have failed as spectacularly as this, or done even worse. As Sharyn Alfonsi - the reporter who did the story - said in an email to her colleagues: “Government silence is a statement, not a VETO. If the administration’s refusal to participate becomes a valid reason to spike a story, we have effectively handed them a ‘kill switch’ for any reporting they find inconvenient.”
Despite all this, the people doing this are afraid. This morning, Scott Jennings - a major media defender of Trump and the MAGA movement - claimed on CNN’s State of the Union that the Epstein Files were more properly The Clinton Files. “I saw all those photos, just like you did!” he shouted. Yes, all the photos of big bad Bill Clinton, the far right’s fetish object for the past 30 years, that appeared in what the Department of (In)Justice claimed was its “compliance” with the new federal law that required them to proved copies of all material they had from the Epstein Files, unredacted other than to protect the identities of the victims - the female children subjected to the sexual crimes of Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, and their rich and powerful male friends. Of all the photos of Trump with Epstein we have seen this past year, there were none. But context-free photos of Bill Clinton, photos of him at events having nothing to do with Epstein and his crimes, were plentiful throughout.
Duhhh... whether the bad news is the Mueller Report, the latest economic numbers, loss of the 2020 election, conviction on 34 felony counts, legal liability from being found guilty as a sexual predator, or anything else, the lackeys and lickspittles who serve Trump will manipulate the facts, omit key information, and move to shape a narrative more favorable to him or one that distracts from and distorts the truth. It’s been his M.O. for as long as he’s been alive.
The MAGA believers should be taking note that the people they supported and put in office hold them in such contempt that they would do something so obviously false as this latest ploy. But this morning showed they will grab anything offered - no matter how transparent the lie - to defend their Dear Leader. It’s been said in other contexts that people who have been conned are the ones most likely to resist accepting the truth of what was done to them. “It’s the Clinton Files, not the Epstein Files!” is proof of that denial of reality.
The most obvious lie in the attempt to create “the Clinton Files” was the use of a photo showing Clinton with Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, and some children, with the implication that the photo catches them with children they are in the midst of exploiting. This was so patently false it only took observers less than 30 minutes to identify the photo as having been taken at a 2003 fund raiser having nothing to do with Jeffrey Epstein, and identifying the children as Micheal Jackson’s son and daughter and Diana Ross’s son.
In the meantime, Representatives Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie - who led the effort to get the Epstein Files released - have announced that, in the wake of the DOJ’s obvious contempt in the way they “complied” with the Epstein Files Transparency Act, that they are talking with both Democratic and Republican House members about moving to hold Attorney General Pam Bondi in inherent contempt of Congress over the Justice Department’s failure to release all files on Jeffrey Epstein by December 19 with limited redactions, as required by law. Holding an official in inherent contempt is among the oldest congressional powers; it allows Congress to force compliance either with fines or detention, and such action entirely bypasses the DOJ. Khanna explained in an appearance on CBS Face the Nation that, “We only need the House for inherent contempt and we’re building a bipartisan coalition.”
The clear, logical conclusion to draw from the months-long efforts by Trump and his toadies to prevent passage of the Epstein Files Transparency Act, coupled with the cover-up directed by Trump that is now underway is that whatever is in the Epstein Files regarding Trump is worse than the blowback they knew they would receive from their attempts to obstruct the disclosure of whatever those crimes are.
And this is good example of what we’re up against: JD Vance, speaking at Turning Point USA’s annual America Fest conference in Phoenix, called out Jasmine Crockett. “Oh, Jasmine Crockett, the record speaks for itself. She wants to be a senator, though her street-girl persona is about as real as her nails!” The racist remark was met with thunderous applause at the event venue packed wall-to-wall with young reactionaries. These people will not be going away and disappearing in 2029.
But there is good holiday news to end on: this morning, Judge Patti B. Saris of the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts ruled that the president’s executive order stopping all leasing for new wind projects was “arbitrary and capricious,” violating federal law, The New York Times reported. The judge, an appointee of President Bill Clinton, found that the Interior Department failed to provide a legally required “reasoned explanation” for halting approvals, noting instead that the “agency defendants candidly concede that the sole factor they considered in deciding to stop issuing permits was the president’s direction to do so.” Trump issued the executive order on his first day in office in January. At that time, several states were developing more than a dozen offshore wind farms to support renewable energy targets. One offshore wind farm has since been completed with five more under construction, though developers have faced permit delays and some projects have been canceled.
The next three years are going to be hard. Every day that passes brings news of uglier vindictiveness, bigger lies, wilder boasts, and ever-worse policies. As Tom Paine wrote, “These are the times that try men’s souls.” But he ended that immortal opener with, “... but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value.” As was the case 250 years ago, we are the only ones who can save us.
Do have a good holiday with those important in your lives.

i know it's in last place on the list of horrors coming out around the Epstein cover-up but i genuinely may never get over the fact this entire quagmire has basically turned every person with a soul who's seen the evidence into the fucking Pepe Silvia meme
