I'm sorry :(
Thank you, friend. I talked it over with a couple of people; one of whom was my mother, and the other was an acting coach and a brilliant woman who has taught the likes of Samira Wiley, Chadwick Boseman, Phylicia Rashad, Corey Hawkins and Taraji P. Henson, and has taught quite a few people who got into Juilliard and who have done well under her tutelage. I straight up ran into a student who was helping coordinate auditions who said he was from DC as well and went to Duke Ellington, at which point I said, “Ooooh! Do you know professor Katz?” and we fangirled over her for about fifteen minutes and, because I was still shaking like a leaf after auditions, he gave me a hug before I left the building and was like, “Don’t worry. Don’t assume you didn’t make callbacks, and even if you didn’t, you have a good base for being an actor.”
Part of it is, Juilliard was part of my big plan as an actor: get in, get my big break as an actor before I graduate (I’m baby-faced, but I’m still older, you see) but finish anyway, and be a brilliant working actor.
And I fucked up step one. I didn’t get into Juilliard.
I have another audition for this semester for Carnegie Mellon, and after that for NYU Tisch School of the Arts. I stand a pretty good chance of getting into both. I’m broke af and so are my (senior citizen) parents, but provided that I’m admitted, I will probably get some sort of grant to both.
I’d always dreamed I’d be admitted. I wasn’t. It’s still tough to process. I know it’s not the final word, but I’d always treated it as such, even knowing most of the people with whom I’d audition would be people with far more training than I have.
So thank you. I’m gobsmacked and, truth be told, devastated. But I have to remind myself that this isn’t the end.
