Cream and Sugar Please || Magical Hiccup 001 || Drabble
Aurelie finished smoothing out the wrinkles on the skirt ofher new dress. She had her eye on the pretty thing the moment she saw it in the boutique’s window. With its intricate details and the touch of delicate pink flowers, it was a winner. Aurelie usually tried not to wear items that were mostly white, for she thought it made her look too washed out but she had made an exception for this one. The moment she had tried it on in the store she knew she needed it. It didn’t make her look pale as other white dresses had, it made her look and feel ethereal. So, after a couple months of saving up paychecks and living off canned soups she had finally had enough to purchase the darling thing. Aurelie traced the lines of the pattern over and over, a goofy grin unable to leave her face. Although she had been wanting to save the dress for a special occasion she decided that today was as good as any. She’d make the walk to Uptown, and perhaps she’d luck out and there would be a free exhibit open at the museum. Aurelie sprayed three pumps of perfume into the air before she stepped through it. She savored the scent and closed her eyes. It was rare when she felt like she was living her old life again and when she did she tried to stretch it out for as long as possible. After checking the lock to her apartment door she descended the stairs of the dingy place and headed up the streets, pretending for this moment that she was Miss Godfrey again.
It wasn’t until she was strolling through Midtown that she noticed how overcast the day was. Her mood had been so high she had failed to notice her surroundings and bit her lip as she looked to the sky. She wished she had brought an umbrella just in case. She quickened her step, knowing she still had a ways to go to reach the museum. Then she felt a warm drop hit her head. “Drats,” she muttered as she quickly looked for some place to take cover. She wrinkled her nose as she spotted various restaurants (which wouldn’t work because she didn’t have any extra money to spend), and a comic book shop (which didn’t sound appealing either). She decided she’d tuff out the rain for another minute or so before she’d make it to the library in the distance. It wasn’t raining that hard just yet. As she sped walked towards her destination she glanced down at her dress, hoping the water droplets hadn’t done too much damage. Aurelie gasped as she saw the white skirt dotted with brown splashes. She whirled around looking for a mud puddle but didn’t see one. Angrily she marched off towards the library with increased haste. Maybe she could treat the spots quickly in the bathroom. When she glanced down again to her horror she saw her dress plastered with more dark brown splotches. The blonde let out a strangled cry when she noticed the rain splashing down beside her wasn’t the color rain normally was. Confused, she cupped her hands and reached them out in front of her. Dark drops landed on her skin, confusing her further. Snapping out of her confusion she began to run, afraid her dress would be ruined for good by the dirty rain. Soon, she had busted through the doors of the library and found herself in its bathroom.
Furiously she pumped the soap dispenser, gathering the liquid in her palm. She began to dab and rub globs of the soap onto her dress and rinsing it with water. The spots faded somewhat, but the damage had been done. Devastated she buried her face in her hands, inhaling the scent of the soap and…coffee? Pulling her hands away from her face she looked down and studied the stains a little closer. They did look like coffee stains. But…she took a strand of her damp hair and sucked on it. It tasted like coffee. But…leaving the bathroom she exited the library and curiously peered out from under the building’s overhang. The puddles forming on the ground weren’t clear like rain and weren’t muddy looking either. She crouched over the nearest one she could find and dipped her finger in it before bringing it to her lips. It was coffee. Despite her frustration over the dress and her confusion over this rain she laughed. It was raining coffee. She stepped out into the rain again and leaned her head back, opening her mouth wide. How could this be? She spit out the mouthful in a very unlady-like way, forgetting for a moment she couldn’t stand the stuff unless it was dosed with cream and sugar. Running back into the library she announced the news. “It’s raining coffee!” She yelled, startling most of its occupants. Hastily, she scooped up a styrofoam cup along with a packet of sugar and creamer from the complimentary coffee bar in the library and headed back outside. She laughed as she pushed through the library doors once again. Although she’d eventually remember the stains on her dress, the lumpy pull out couch mattress she sleeps on and the never ending shifts she works at the diner, right now she was happy. And that was enough.
