Backstory:
Chohoqua hails from a long line of beast herders, amid a fairly localized tribe deep in the Northern Wastes. Her family’s work has allowed their tribe to settle down and live easily, changing the nature of the Hunt for them--it’s now more of a show of dominance, with skilled Hunters escalating quickly among the ranks of society. Those born into the lifestyle, like her nemesis Raqh’Falah, are treated as spoiled aristocrats, whereas working folk like her must scrape by to enter the Hunt. But scrape by she did, and she crawled to the top of her tribe with her unorthodox skillset--and now that she’s here, she won’t let anyone take it away from her.
You are an elite warrior who stalks the monstrosities
that threaten your tribe and savage your land.
With every tattoo inked in the blood of the beasts,
you claim more power.
With every kill, you prepare to face stronger foes.
Only the most skilled and
most cunning Beast Hunters survive.
Will you?
Name:
Chel'qhuri names often include harsh consonant sounds. CH and QH are also common.
Alright, so… Chohoqua.
Three kinds of initiative--Physical, Mental, and Social--all rated at 1 to start. And 3 damage tracks--the same categories--with one box in each level (light, medium, heavy, incapacitating, and fatal).
Step 1: Parents
How did Chohoqua’s parents influence her life? This gives her one trait (Physical, Mental, or Social), one resource (Physical Offensive, Physical Defensive, Mental Offensive, Mental Defensive, Social Offensive, or Social Defensive), one Initiative level, and two damage boxes (one light and one medium).
Let’s do something unorthodox--we’ll say Chohoqua is the descendent of a long line of beastmasters, dating back to the old world. As such, we’ll give her a Mental trait, “The Animals Speak to Me,” to represent her unique understanding of wildlife, and a Physical Offensive resource--a “Wild Boar Companion”. We’ll bring up Physical Initiative and Damage, however, to represent the rough-and-tumble lifestyle it takes to handle animals.
Step 2: Tribe
How did her tribe shape her upbringing? One trait, one resource, one point of initiative, and one light damage box.
Well, let’s think--if her tribe has livestock covered, why hunt? I think it’s for sport, to prove who is fit to lead. As such, we’ll give Chohoqua the trait “Push it to the Limit,” representing the need to rise above her peers in physical contests of strength and speed. For a resource… let’s go with “Psychological Warfare” (Social Offensive), so she can psych out her rivals. And we’ll add her Initiative and Damage both to Social.
Step 3: Enemies
A hunter is defined by their enemies. Chohoqua’s granted her one trait and one resource, as well as one Initiative and one light damage box.
Chohoqua’s not a natural hunter; she came into the Hunt late in adolescence. So her nemesis Raqh’Falah, wealthy and privileged son of a Hunter. Her trait will be “Fight Like An Animal” (Physical), which marks her as different from more polished combatants with her feral, vicious combat style, and her resource will be “Your Words Fall on Deaf Ears” (Social Defensive) to resist mockery and pranks. We’ll up her Social Initiative by 1 (she doesn’t wait for them to insult her first), and up her Physical damage by 1.
Step 4: Beasthunter Training
Chohoqua picked up one final Trait and Resource on the road to being a Beasthunter, as well as one last point in Initiative, and 2 damage boxes (light, and medium).
She came into hunting well trained physically and mentally--but the performative aspects of the Hunt eluded her until the very end. We’ll make her trait “All the Hunt is a Show” (Social), to reflect the need of Hunters to impress the Elders with epic tales and feats of showmanship. Her resource, on the other hand, will be the “Finely Crafted Armor” (Physical Defensive) given out to all the up-and-coming Hunters in her tribe upon their first hunt. Finally, her initiative and damage will go into Mental, as she has… seen things.
Step 5: Finalize
Now, we assign some numbers, and we’re all done.
Definitely not the shortest chargen process, but I love how it produces a ton of backstory for your character that you can take from game to game.
Create-A-Character Challenge: Bowie and the Starman
Two characters for Freaks and Geeks: a hack of Barbarians of Lemuria by WrathofZombie. See the character creation process here.
Dr. Cassandra Bowie, Parapsychologist
You ever hear voices, late a night? Strange ones, ancient tongues, doom prophecies, all that jazz? Yeah. Me too. That's why I got into parapsychology. Figured if I could know all there was about the weird stuff, figuring out my own brain would come easy. It didn't. So, I started lifting. That helps.

The Starman
Major Thom Pritchard, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, 12 years. Flew into an unexplained vortex during experimental flight testing, 1972. Awoke in New York City, 2014. Seemingly a ghost, or other ectoplasmic life form. Hypothesis: my body is still out there, or I'd be dead. Objective: retrieve and identify situation leading to vortex. Awaiting orders.

G-G-G-G-GHOST: when attempting to make friends and use diplomacy, The Starman rolls 3d6 and takes the worst possible result.
Create-A-Character Challenge: Freaks & Geeks (Barbarians of Lemuria Hack)
Download Link (It's free!)
Description:
Freaks and Geeks is a hack of Barbarians of Lemuria. My goal has been to leave the system largely intact without massive overt changes or clunky additional rules. I created this hack because I thought the BoL system was extremely rules-light (which is fucking awesome), robust, and able to handle cinematic style play, such as Hellboy, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Doctor Who, or whatever.
The great thing about the BoL system is that there are no complications when hacking it to another genre or style. Just understand how the simple mechanics work and that this game is about being awesome and a dialogue between players and the GM in the hopes of achieving their goals, having fun, and you’re solid.
The other goal I had was to strip away lists and powers presented in BoL and the need to consult anything at all. A few examples of Boons and Flaws are given, but largely the players should come up with their own kickassery powers! That’s it.. Now go play!
AHA! A-HA! This is why I downloaded Barbarians of Lemuria! I knew there was a reason. I’m a big fan of both WrathOfZombie’s stuff and Hellboy/Doctor Who/Indiana Jones/Et Al, so it’d make sense I’d pick it up.
1) Choose either Freak (Hellboy, Abe Sapien, Et Al) or Norm (Agent Dale Cooper). Y’know what? I’m going to do one of each; sort of an Angel and the Ape-style human/monster pairing. A human psychologist and… let’s say a ghost pilot.
2) Four attributes (Strength, Agility, Mind, Appeal). Freaks get 5 points, Norms get 4. Max of 4 for Freaks, 3 for Norms. One ability may be lowered to -1 to gain an extra point.
For our Norm, we’ll go with 3 Mind, and 1 Strength. She works out hard to deal with the scars left by parapsychology. And for our Freak, we’ll lower Appeal to -1 (G-G-G-Ghost!), take 4 Agility (the Right Stuff! Also, mad gun-fu), and bring Strength and Mind both to 1.
3) Four combat abilities (Brawl, Melee, Ranged, Defense). Both characters start at 4 points, and may lower one ability to -1 to gain a 5th. Max of 4 for Freaks, 3 for Norms.
Going with the workout enthusiast idea, our Norm will have 3 points in Brawl and 2 in Defense (taking a -1 to Ranged, because she’s not trained in firearms). She’s a scrapper. Meanwhile, our Ghost is a military man, trained in a little bit of everything—he’ll take 1 in all four skills!
5) Careers. Four points in a freeform selection of backgrounds each. Freaks must take “Freak” as one of their backgrounds.
Our Norm is a Parapsychologist by trade, so that’s her first career. We’ll go with 3 here. And for her last point… let’s say she’s kept on retainer by the police, and give her “Private Investigator 1.”
For our Freak, let’s split points evenly between his Freaky Power (I’m envisioning a haunted jet plane) and his background as a test pilot.
6) Boons and Flaws. Boons represent special skills and powers; they let our heroes roll 3d6 and take the highest two results, while Flaws force them to roll 3d6 and take the lower. Freaks get two Boons and a Flaw; Norms get three Boons and a Flaw. Either can give up two Hero Points (more on that later) for an additional power.
Our Freak will give up Hero Points for a third Boon. Two of these Boons go into his haunted jet:
He can fly the jet remotely, even when not onboard, as though he was in the cockpit
When performing aerial combat stunts, he rolls 3d6 and takes the highest result.
His remaining power will represent classic Ghost Phasing. He may make a Freaky Power + Mind check to pass through objects. Doing so by himself is an Easy action; each additional person he brings along ups the difficulty by one. (His jet, in this case, counts as a person.)
For a flaw, we’ll say (because he's a ghost) when attempting to make friends and use diplomacy, he rolls 3d6 and takes the worst result.
Our Norm’s abilities should be decidedly human in nature. So we’ll base all three on her parapsychology career:
When attempting to psychoanalyze a person, she rolls 3d6 and takes the highest result.
When resisting the effects of fear due to exposure to the paranormal, she rolls 3d6 and takes the highest result.
And we'll permanently raise her Mind to 4 (technically passing the maximum, but she's a crazy supergenius).
For a flaw, we’ll go with… classic Ghostbusters “I don’t trust your made up degree” shenanigans. When attempting to navigate Bureaucracy and Government, she rolls 3d6 and takes the lowest result.
I don't know what kind of adventures these two'd have together, but I'm very happy with how they turned out.
Create-A-Character Challenge: Tengaka the Battle-Prince
A Character for Barbarians of Lemuria. See the Character Creation Process Here.
“I’m not really a prince, I just think it sounds impressive.”
Raised in the distant mountains, Tengaka lusted for combat since childhood. He became the rare type of gladiator who entered the arenas by choice, slaying many opponents along the way and becoming renowned for his innovative high-flying style. But, as he is wont to do (it is his weakness, really), Tengaka grew bored and now wanders the earth, seeking good times and great fortune.

Description:
"It is a savage age of sorcery and bloodshed, where strong men and beautiful women, warlords, priests, magicians and gladiators battle to carve a bloody path leading to the Throne of Lemuria. It is an age of heroic legends and valiant sagas too. And this is one of them..."
Barbarians of Lemuria; swords & sorcery roleplaying, inspired by Thongor, Conan, Brak, Elric and other epic heroes. Barbarians of Lemuria has been acclaimed by many as one of the best roleplaying games of this genre. In this "Legendary Edition", there are a few changes and some extra goodies to give you much more sword & sorcery role playing goodness.
1. Assign 4 points between the following attributes, zero is possible: Strength, Agility, Mind, and Appeal.
I’m picturing a very specific barbarian for this adventurer, sort of a high-flying warrior, leaping from target to target cracking skulls. One of the Usos, basically. I’m going to go 3 Agility, 1 Strength.
2. Assign 4 points between 4 combat abilities, zero is possible: Brawl, Melee, Ranged, Defense.
Obviously, you can’t hit a flying dude, so we’ll go 2 points defense. Then we’ll split the remaining 2 points between Brawl and Melee, so I can bury a sword in a skull, and then deliver a flying kick to a face.
3. HP – Strength + 10. 11 HP!
4. Assign 4 points between a long list of careers (too long to list here). I’m going to put 2 points into Gladiator, the historical Pro Wrestler. The other two points will go into Barbarian for the explosive rage.
5. Characters begin with 5 hero points.
6. Choose appropriate equipment. We’ll keep it simple, a leather skirt, a Greatsword (a big honkin’ scimitar affair), and a battle harness.
Simple enough. I wish the character creation section provided more insight into what attribute points did, but the rules themselves are satisfyingly short, so they pretty clearly convey that.
A Character for Atomic Highway. See the Character Creation Process Here.
I didn’t want no trouble. But trouble seemed to have other plans. I liked livin’ quiet at my farm. I liked helpin’ my ‘stead. And I liked the animals. But then they came. The muties. They burned everything. They burned everyONE. And they took my livestock. It was the last straw. Now me, and Cow, and Pig, we walk the earth lookin’ for ‘em. Can’t tell ya which way home was anymore. Can’t tell ya how long ago home was. Some nights I can’t tell ya IF home was. But I can sure tell ya how many shells I got left, and how many muties I’ve left dead on the road. And maybe now that’s all that matters.
