I was asked by @frisbs in my last post regarding my experience with Creative Paperclay on my customized vinyl sculpture. I’m virtually brand new to the material and am rusty at sculpting, but I found it pretty forgiving once I learned not to be so heavy-handed at it (pressing too hard, adding too much water, etc.) I found it generally tricky to re-integrate chunks of clay with one another once they were removed from the block, but a bowl of clean water and keeping hands moist and moistening (but not over-wetting) the clay while I worked it back into a more forgiving consistency helped a lot. I did lightly roll some of my clay pieces and cut/shaped with xacto knives to get a more precise look, otherwise I used my plain ol’ fingers, and wooden/silicone pottery tools! ALSO the best part of this stuff if how fun it is to shape via sanding/carving after it’s properly dried. Luckily it’s non-toxic, but you may fare better if you wear at least some sort of mask to keep those fine paper particles out of your airways!
I found a blog post that details beginning techniques and properties way better than I can explain, I think I’ll be browsing this and youtube so I can be better prepared for my own next paperclay adventure. Because, despite the frustration and the learning curve, it is pretty fun once I’m warmed up!
Scultping the character Dolphin-Legs from paperclay! I sculpted, let it dry, sanded it, added more clay, and repeated. I have a long way to go yet!
