German Shepherd Dog (GSD)

Height: Males (24-26 in.) Females (22-24 in.) Weight: 65-100 lbs Color: Black & tan, other bi-colors, golden sable, gray sable, solid black Country of Origin: Germany Group: Herding The GSD is a very bright, fearless, and courageous dog. It is very loyal to its pack but can be leery of strangers if not socialized. They must have a leader with a calm, but firm, confident and consistent demeanor – The GSD does not respond well to harsh discipline. They must have mental and physical activity – this is NOT a “couch puppy” PROs: Faithful and brave High learning ability/one of the smartest and most trainable dogs A stable, well-adjusted, and trained dog is generally good with other pets and an excellent family pet.

CONs: They shed a LOT (all year long and even more seasonally) Shouldn’t be left alone for long periods of time (they’ll get bored and find ways to occupy themselves) If the dog considers the human leaders to be weak, they WILL take over as the alpha dog and major problems can (and probably will) arise. A good, strong leader is paramount!

creativePAW: Latest Scoop, January 2014

CreativePAW was initially founded in 2008 as a message board where organizations could post requests for volunteer assistance. We basically functioned as a matchmaker between animal welfare organizations that needed help and the volunteers who could actually help them. I took over in 2010 and although we are still focused on the organizations, the focus has now shifted to include the volunteers a lot more. I feel that in order to successfully run an organization like this one, we must get to know our volunteers individually and give them professional recognition for the amazing jobs they do on our behalf. This is why we have added our Volunteer Hall of Fame to our programs; we are hoping this will not only create incentive and generate PR, but hopefully garner exposure for paying work. Other cool features coming in 2014 ONLY to our existing volunteers are:

To this end, creativePAW is now: Creative Projects for Animal Welfare! We initiated this change because we do not want to alienate any potential volunteers. While our focus will remain on the creative projects for the time being, we want to be clear; we need volunteers from all walks of life, creative and "non-creative" types alike - we are all talented and all have a gift to offer and we can utilize everyone! We will be receiving our 501(c)(3) certification in the first half of 2014 and are very excited about the possibilities this coveted status will bring! Moving forward, we want to start applying our creative approach to real world projects like adoption events, fundraisers, etc., however right now, we are focusing on building our network, so that we may eventually be able to expand our volunteer recruitment program into real world projects in different cities across the county.
