BREED OF THE MONTH: GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG (GSD) by Laurie Luke
Height: Males (24-26 in.) Females (22-24 in.): 65-100 lbs Color: Black & tan, other bi-colors, golden sable, gray sable, solid black Country of Origin: Germany Group: Herding
The GSD is a very bright, fearless, and courageous dog. It is very loyal to its pack but can be leery of strangers if not socialized. They must have a leader with a calm, but firm, confident and consistent demeanor – The GSD does not respond well to harsh discipline.
They must have mental and physical activity – this is NOT a “couch puppy”
PROs: Faithful and brave High learning ability/one of the smartest and most trainable dogs A stable, well-adjusted, and trained dog is generally good with other pets and an excellent family pet. CONs:
They shed a LOT (all year long and even more seasonally) Shouldn’t be left alone for long periods of time (they’ll get bored and find ways to occupy themselves. If the dog considers the human leaders to be weak, they WILL take over as the alpha dog and major problems can (and probably will) arise. A good, strong leader is paramount!
