On this windy autumn afternoon,

While colourful leaves fall off trees,

Nature sings a rustling tune,

And one leaf that falls below my feet stands out from all the others in this breeze,

The leaf is red, just like the maple leaf that represents a certain place,

It lies on the pavement while the other leaves are going after the wind in a chase,

I’m falling in love

I’ve started dancing,

Alone.

Barefoot.

Shades drawn shut and music and bubbly smoke filling me up.

Time escapes me.

My mind elates me whilst my breath rises and falls with every spin and tumble

My feet create abstract patterns and fast light strides of passion.

I can’t hide my giggly smile.

My energy creating color and photographic quality memory

In the moment,

I feel as if I’m falling

I’ve never been in love.

Yet I can’t help but to think,

This is it.

How truly lovely it is

To fall in love with such beautiful euphoric moments, such as this.

I have eaten the squash you were saving.

Cucurbita Maxima, or-

the blue Guatemalan. He-an unpretentious 

sort of fellow, hefty but a touch ungainly-

sat well in the crook of my still-fidgeting elbow.

The flesh was cleaned, scored, severed, salted and roasted

adorned with oil, and herbs.

The seeds, I extracted-

pulled from their pulpy womb

damp and glistening, clinging to fleshy strings.

Some willingly loosened, sat patiently in their newly-made cavern,

awaiting my deliberate fingers’ gentle beckoning.

They have been washed, laid to dry on a slab of wood, and sheet of paper.

I consider for the first time the universality of seeds’ hydrophobia,

their slippery sheen turned to glistening crispness 

as the furtive morning light catches each tender belly,

Each swollen hull.

Discarding the papery ghosts, 

I gather the rest- the promising lot,

and watch them bounce joyfully into an unused pickle jar.

I eat your squash.

It is more dense, and more sweet, than I had imagined.

Keeps

Moving

And trust me you need the merry-go-round,

more

than it needs you.

And in the end,

You can choose,

To hop back on,

Or get left in the dust.
