Cyborg Unicorns pt 13
“It was so nice to meet you!” My mom waved as we walked out the door. My dad didn’t say anything. “Oh, honey, quit pretending you hate the kid,” Mom elbowed my dad.
Dad rolled his eyes and couldn’t help himself from grinning. “Okay, okay. I admit it, you’re not half bad.” He shook Kellar’s hand.
Kellar chuckled, “Thank you, sir, and thank you for having me.” My dad nodded.
As we walked back to campus I couldn’t help but smiling. “They like you, Kellar.” I leaned my head on his shoulder. It was quite dark.
“Yeah, that was some New Year’s Eve party. I will admit, I liked it a lot better than I would have like the campus party.” Kellar squeezed my hand,
I laughed. “It’s just funny. My mom got her way after all. She called right before you came to pick me up and she invited us over,I told her you had plans. You have a lot going for you since you took me to church, boy.”
I looked up at the stars and remembered in November when we ran away and went star gazing. “Thank you for that, by the way. I mean, for getting me to go to church. I enjoyed it.”
“It was my pleasure.” Kellar looked at his phone. “Hey, ten minuted until the new year.
“A new start. “I yawned and watched the moon as we stood in the empty street. A lot had changed in the last three months. A street that used to be a temptation to end my life, was now an opportunity to admire the stars. I turned to face Kellar. “You know,” I hesitated, “I’m really happy that I get to have you by my side for this new start.
Kellar’s face turned red and he laughed, a laugh that lit up his face. I’d never seen the boy blush before. he held both of my hands and kissed them. “I’ll be right back.” He dashed though the campus parking lot and came back a few minutes later with a blanket bundled in his arms.
I giggled like a little girl as he spread the blanket on the grass and sat down, leaning back on his palms. I sat next to him and he shifted his position, I knew that was my welcome to lean on his shoulder. My head fit perfectly in the crook of his neck.
“You can see the stars perfectly from here,” I sighed.
“That’s Orion, right?” Kellar asked, pointing to the constellation.
I smiled, “I can’t believe you remembered.“
Fireworks went off in the distance and we smiled at each other. “Happy New Year.” Kellar grinned.
“Happy New Year,” I returned.
“So, are we like, supposed to kiss or something?” Kellar winked at me.
I blushed and rolled my eyes. “I can’t believe I used to think you were shy.” I smoothed back the black, feathery hair that fell over Kellar’s forehead and put my hand on his cheek. I wanted to tell him I love him. I so wanted to. But I didn’t. I kissed Kellar on the edge of his lips.
He pushed his glasses up and looked at me with scrunchy eyes. “I don’t know what kind of kiss that was but it was really cute.”
