What do the butterflies know?

Every year when migrating, Monarch butterflies pass over a certain section of Lake Superior. Or rather, they don’t pass over a certain section of Lake Superior; although it is directly in their flight path. Instead, these butterflies, and all previous and future generations of butterflies, fly 5 miles to the west before continuing south.

Scientists have determined that this is because butterflies pass along information genetically and hundreds of millions of years ago there was a mountain that the butterflies would have to fly around. Due to the genetic nature of their learning, butterflies to this day fly around the mountain.

Scientists are only half right.

The butterflies know what we humans do not.

At the bottom of Lake Superior lies a great evil. Old as time, as unknowable as the world beyond death, this creature rests in a deep slumber.

While not currently a threat to man or butterflies, the butterflies remember what we do not. That we should fear the awakening of this creature to our very core.

Humans only pass along memories by story, leaving us exposed to many of the old terrors of the world that we simply do not remember to be afraid of. Or that our ancestors passed along and we wrote off as “lore” “legends” “myths” and “tales”. Believe me when I say, all of these stories are true. There are a great many things that lay lurking in the shadows or the deeps of the seas. Many of these things have fallen under times spell and sleep. For now. But no matter what the creature, sleep only lasts so long.

Sooner or later these creatures will awaken and when that times comes, the butterflies will be prepared, while we humans will not.

So the butterflies continue to avoid where the deep sleeps. After all, isn’t it said that the flap of a butterfly’s wings can cause a storm on the other side of the world? Could you imagine what it would do above a sleeping beast of old?

In a desperate attempt to sustain peace in the time of the Keign Wars, and at the end of the "Archdemon"'s siege, the heroes and their allies put together powerful magics to seal away the seemingly malevolent portals that opened up. Consequently, the process seemed to flood the lands with energies that were long lost, and rarely detected. 

While the highly accepted theory is that these once deemed "extinct" species all were in hiding beyond the Kazinian borders, few speculate that there were other forces responsible for their sudden reappearance.

Conspiracies aside, the rise of old magics and creatures began to reshape humanoid occupations, and forced many peoples to adjust their way of living, arguably beginning a new age.
