. Homeward Bound :: Studio Grooves . #jessagilbertart . Left: 2017, “Homeward Bound”, a painting of a sailboat coming into Squamish, with a cloudy sea of uncertainty swirling above the town and Garibaldi. I had just moved to Squamish during a particularly rainy Spring... and blown my Achilles’ tendon. . Right: 2022 (Work in Progress), a painting of Howe Sound leading into Garibaldi, showcasing its face in golden light amidst a turbulent sky. I began this painting shortly after moving back to Squamish last fall, feeling elated to be welcomed home by the community in this town. . I haven’t seen the (left) painting from 2017 in years, as it’s been hanging elsewhere while I moved around BC. It’s so fun to look at all the similarities and differences between the two paintings - then and now. The style, palette, texture, etc. . I love this painting. . While I was having a challenging time in 2017 when I painted it, I was exploring a new freedom in the studio. 2017 was also the year I quit my stable, full time desk job at MEC to pursue art and guiding full time and the year I got my Permanent Resident card. 2017 was the year I won the bid for the #creeksideunderpassmural in Whistler, and the year I spoke at the @thevimff in Vancouver. . To me, this painting marks the beginning of something. I loved having it back in the studio this week... but now it’s off to a new home in Kelowna!
