Creepers
Wandering and Common Creepers
Creepers are the only known members of their group due to their strange capabilities and biology when compared with other groups. And while there are oral tellings of them being spawned from a god-like being trying to create the pig, besides from their opprtunistic diet and snuffling sounds they may create when eating, there is little evidence of them being actually related to or descended from pigs.
Studying creepers, however, to try and place them within a better understanding of development and relation to the various species of the Otherworld is a difficult task. Common Creepers have an aggressive habit of sneaking up and subsquentially blowing up researchers while Wanderers are a rare, yet sapient, species. Wanderers, while often deeply intergrained into player societies, also very much prefer to be left alone and while some may allow for themselves to be studied as live specimens, most others would rather be left alone to their own devices.
Wandering Creepers:
They share an appearance similar to that of the Common Creeper (also known as the quadrupedal creeper or simply ‘creepers’) with green fur (often darker in a ‘saddle’ like pattern on the back when compared with the countershading of the other species), dark eyes, sheathable claws, long facial whiskers, and curious internal mouth features such as metal-tipped tongues, abnormally bulky premolars, and ridged roofs of the mouth.
Wanderers are the larger of the two, often standing taller than the average player yet shorter than the average piglin. They hold a bipedal stance thanks to their muscular hindlegs and large, weight-distributing feet. Their feet also notable for cushioning padding and soft fur that helps make their steps nearly silent.
Their arms are supported by muscular attached along their broad chest allowing for a wider range of motion then expected and strong gripping capability. It is thought to have been developed to make up for their fingers being stiffer and less flexible than what is typically observed in sapient species. It is believed their ‘lesser’ thumb, the smaller thumb settled along the inner wrist (being a modified dewclaw), is a further adaption to make up for this lower flexibility. The ‘dominant’ thumb, afterall, can only reach to the secondary or middle finger along the Wanderers’ hands.
The hands and feet have retractable claws unlike the Creeper, which only has retractable claws along its front feet. Their elbows and knees are ‘double-jointed’ and showcase a greater range of motion than what would be expected, another feature shared with Creepers, though Wanderers are noted to have an increase chance to develop arthritis in the hips and knees, often showcase more pain within these double-joints as they age, and do not have as far of motion as what can be seen in Creepers.
Common Creepers:
The smaller of the two species, they typically stand about waist height to players but when they initiate an explosion, they will stand up on their hindlegs and can stand about shoulder height during these moments. Its thought this may be why their hind claws can’t retract, but whether or not this is the case is up for debate. It could be to simply help with grip when traveling or climbing.
Creepers can be found frequently in any biome of the overworld as long as there is darkness, for while they do not mind coming out in the day, their large pupils are best made for pulling in light at night. In the day this can cause poor spacial awareness and even if a Creeper was prusuing a player, out of eyeline, they will quickly lose track of them.
Most of their danger comes from their stealth, fearlessness towards most other things besides cats for some reason, and of course, their tendecy to explode. While creepers are mainly known for this last habit, only Creepers can explode themselves and not Wanderers (well, unless the Wanderer decides to make tnt for some reason and blows themself up). Technically, a Wanderer still holds habits and biology that cooresponds to the Creeper capability to self-explode, but they are missing the sparking ability.
Creepers and Wanderers ingest and hold minerals and biological substances within their bodies known to be flammable, these substances seeping into the fat, skin, fur, etc. It creates a charge that is further built via their own life magic, creating a constant hum of static along their bodies and making them sensitive to strong electrical currents.
This can even increase their chances to be struck by lightening, and while it can ‘super-charge’ Creepers, it often just shocks a Wanderer and makes their fur stick up on end. It is a hilarious sight truthfully, you never realize how fluffy either species is until you’re trying to measure body dimensions and you’re hand sinks into a sea of fur.
Back on track, the reason a Creeper can ignite while a Wanderer can’t is because of the difference of tongue structures. Both species have a thick tongue that splits (closer to the end in Wanderers and closer to half length in Creepers) into a forked appearance, each tongue tip holding a curious hardened metallic tip. This is used to groom the fur (assisting in management of a comfortable charge), sharpen and clean the teeth (which grow throughout their lives, being worn down by their habit of eating bones and rocks from mineral deposits), and creating their famous hissing via running across the ridged roof of the mouth.
However, Creepers also have an additional feature. Lacking in the Wanderers, the Creepers have a series of metallic ridges along their tongue. This is what creates a Creeper’s own ‘flint and steel,’ for when a Creeper wishes to explode, they will rapidly run their tongue along the roof of the mouth, often creating a stronger hiss as the life magic within builds the internal charge into energy that can further be used to inflict as much damage and injury as possible while the body is consumed.
It is unknown when or how Wanderers lost this ability, but some believe it simply has to do with no longer holding a need to attack in this way when they could instead use tools and utilize more purposeful magic. Though why Creepers use this method to attack when they also share the sharp claws and devastating biting capability of the Wanderers is unknown.
They are, simply, built different. This fact merely highlighted by the fact that even after exploding, a Creeper can still live. Much like the mythos of flaming birds raising from the ashes of their old bodies, Creepers usually do a similar thing. Life magic left behind in the explosion will gather ash into a smaller form, often referred to as a ‘kitten.’
Kittens are very small, gray-furred miniatures of the adult with fluffy fur and raised ears (they are vunerable and need to hear better than adults that can be more reckless when they can often regenerate). Most times when a kitten is ‘born,’ it is merely a copy of the previous Creeper. However, on occasions, the crater will spawn multiple kittens. This divides the life magic that would be unified in a singular kitten and effectively kills the old Creeper and bringing forth new kittens entirely.
It is unknown if there are kittens of Wanderers or how they even come to be as they are very dodgey about these questions and seem almost amused to keep these secrets. Like utter assholes. I know you’re fucking reading this, you know who you are.
Creepers communicate eith one another through low hisses and clicks along with body lanaguage and tail posturing. Their somewhat rabbit-like tail is longer than the near invisible nubs of Wanderers’ and can be purposefully moved to showcase intent. A raised tail indicates attentiveness or asseriveness, waving of this raised tail indicating an irritated or sometimes excited state. Lowering of the tail can showcase uncertainity or unease, a near fully downward tail showcasing more extreme fear or pain. Much rarer to witness is a curled tail, a sign of ease and relaxation. Their reactive nature and explosive tendecies often paint them as an aggressive and dangerous creature, but when left alone and undisturbed, they are mostly content to forarge, dig for mineral deposits, and scavenge food left behind by anything from wolves to players.
Their teeth make short work of most things they eat, the premolars being the foremost crushing power with the molars merely further pulzarizing anything else. The front, smaller teeth are almost exclusive used for grooming and keeping the skin parasite free.
Both species are fascinating in their own rights and while they may be difficult to study and better understand, there is little doubt to their notable standing as a truly unique and strange grouping.
I don't really like how the drawing turned out, but I'll show it to you anyway..
