I am a small time video producer in Saint Paul, Minnesota. I sit in front of a few computers (a Mac and a Windows) most of the time, but I have never considered myself any sort of computer whiz. It is just another tool that I have figured out adequately to do my work. Thankfully, a lot of my job is also getting outside and interacting with the real world. There is still a gap between the “IT Staff” and the rest of us, but it used to be a chasm. Wondrous computer technology is being adopted by all segments. The plumber who clears your sewer line is likely to email a receipt from his tablet after swiping your card on his Square reader (hell, that scenario’s probably out of date already) My mother in-law is always one upping me with the latest phone. It’s all beautiful. I love gear. On one recent shoot I had my traditional HD professional camcorder, a DSLR style 4k camera (with a track and dolly), a GoPro Hero, and a time-lapse unit. I would have used a quadcopter too, if not for the FAA . Now, if I leave the office with one camera, I feel lazy. And now, this week we are in the midst of a total overhaul of our master control and cablecast system. I had stopped caring about our local television channel a long time ago. It wasn’t even HD for cryin’ out loud. And besides, who even watches TV anymore? I spend my effort marketing online distribution, social media and all that. But this is actually going to be pretty cool. HD broadcast finally (we have been producing and distributing HD content online for about 5 years), multi-zone information displays, all the bells and whistles. And lots of new software to learn! So, to gear up for this infusion of new technology: a little bit of my favorite EDM cyborgs.
