It is 1681 and Thomas Burnet, a theologian naturalist, has just published his epic 'Sacred Theory of the Earth'. It is one of the first books of its kind, attempting to give a large-scale history of the epochal development of the earth as a physical system. It is, however, riddled with theology. For Burnet's real motivations was to explain why the planet's surface seems so ... irrational. Look at all the ugly mountains, Burnet complained, and all the unsightly crevices, cracks and crags. It certainly doesn't look like the work of an infinitely skilled artisan! More like a 'rude lump', he observes bitterly.
