CRÍA CUERVOS dir. Carlos Saura (1976)
Movie of the Day: Cria Cuervos
One of director Carlos Saura's masterpieces, starring Ana Torrent as an eight year-old girl dealing with a troubled, at times alienating, childhood. Torrent had previously starred in another masterwork, Victor Erice's The Spirit of the Beehive.
Saura was an outspoken opponent of the Francoist Regime in Spain, and the film contains a lot of harsh criticisms of Spanish life under Franco. Torrent's character deals with guilt and sadness in both her inner world of private traumas and her public life under Franco's policies. Saura said the film was sad because "childhood is one of the most terrible parts in the life of a human being. What I'm trying to say is that at that age you've no idea where it is you are going, only that people are taking you somewhere, leading you, pulling you and you are frightened. You don't know where you're going or who you are or what you are going to do. It's a time of terrible indecision."
Geraldine Chaplin, who was Saura's common law wife at the time and starred in 10 of his films, plays the girl's mother, who is often distant.
The film won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. It was released on January 25, 1976, fifty years ago today.
