Toy gun used to deter robber -- Please don’t try this at home, but……

The saying ‘Don’t bring a knife to a gun fight’ is pretty good advice.  Fighting fire with fire, so to speak tends to even the odds.  But on occasion, a skilled knife fighter CAN win out over a firearm wielding opponent.

What will likely be the Pittsburgh, PA resident’s ‘lifetime best bluff’  occurred early Sunday morning, June 29, 2014.

Improvise – Adapt – Overcome

The 24 year old was home alone playing a video game.  Wearing a headset, he was unaware a man entered his home.  Upon discovery, feeling threatened he reached for the closest ‘weapon’ available to subdue the intruder.  Arming himself with what he describes as a ‘prop gun’, he was able to detain the intruder until the police arrived.

The actual firearm ‘prop’ was not identified in police reports.  It was likely the video game gun the resident had earlier been using when playing the game was used.

Today toy guns can appear very real.  AirSoft is a manufacturer of realistic looking CO2 powered pistols and rifles.  In 2013 California police officers shot and killed 13 year old Andy Lopez after mistaking Lopez’s ‘toy’ gun for an AK-47 rifle.

Many states have laws requiring toy guns be manufactured with a red or orange tip for identification, but there is no consistency.  To further confuse law enforcement, some criminals have taken to painting orange on the tips of their guns to avoid being shot.  Some teens have scraped off or masked the orange to make their ‘toy’ gun look real.

Would be robber convinced   

When police arrived at the Oakland neighborhood home, the resident was holding would be robber Kymarr Freeman (23 year old) at bay.  Freeman was arrested and charged with burglary and criminal trespass.

Upon learning he was ‘held’ with a prop or toy gun, Freeman had no printable comment.  He is being held in the Allegheny County Jail.

Truth is truth, even when the gun control advocates disagree.  NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre said it best,

‘Only Way To Stop A Bad Guy With A Gun, Is With A Good Guy With A Gun.’

But in the absence of a gun, the mere appearance of a gun is sometimes enough to deter the would be bad guy.
